China surprised a few days ago with a new measure against the coronavirus: anal testing. The novelty has not gone unnoticed and has even already been imported into Spain: Galicia has joined this new procedure.
, the Galician Ministry of Health has recognized that these tests have begun to be used in people who have a “compromised” airway, that is, who are intubated in serious condition in hospital ICUs. Thus, these tests cannot be used to detect positives, but to check if a person becomes negative after being infected.
According to the Chinese authorities, these tests have a higher precision than PCR or antigen tests. They examine existing samples in the anus, unlike other tests that do it with blood or saliva samples.
The first tests of this type were carried out in Beijing and, according to the infectious disease doctor Li Tongzeng, they yield more accurate results because traces of the coronavirus could remain in the anus longer than in the nose or throat.
For this reason, it was also used in China. There they have been used for people in quarantine and residents in confined neighborhoods due to the increase in infections. Galicia has also found a specific group in which to use them.
