App development course for Apple TV – .com

In this course, we’re going to learn how to create an Apple TV app from scratch, using a Mac, Swift, and the Xcode IDE. Get ready to see your app on the big screen!

On September 12, 2006 Steve Jobs announced the first Apple TV, at that time Apple called it iTV. However, the iTV would not be marketed until a year later.

Yes, Apple TV has been with us since 2007, Steve Jobs defined it as a hobby for Apple, that is, a product that was there, but was not essential for them. Back then the iPod was king, Apple’s darling, and in later years the iPhone took over to this day.

The Apple TV has changed a lot over the years, and today it is a completely different device from the one that was announced at MacWorld in 2007.

To begin with, the first Apple TVs, the so-called iTVs, had a large storage hard drive, the largest capacity was 160Gb. For this reason it was very well adopted as a multimedia center in many homes, but not before doing the so-called Jailbreak to be able to have the freedom to store content on your hard drive.

In the next generation that was released three years later, that is to say in the year 2010, the Apple TV changed completely. I no longer had a hard drive to store movies, photos, or any multimedia content. Streaming was gradually making its way into our ADSL connections.

This second generation and the third with its corresponding updates, passed without penalty or glory, since they had no storage capacity, and worst of all, that third-party Apps could not be installed. Apple included some installed Apps as standard, without a doubt a very closed system with very few possibilities.

It was not until 2015, in its fourth generation, when what interests us as software developers arrived: the App Store. From then on, the ban on creating Apps for Apple TV was opened, something that was not possible on previous devices, which integrated a few applications that Apple decided were there “per se”.

And so, from those beginnings of the Apple hobby, we come here to the course to learn how to develop an application for Apple TV. The Apple TV of our days integrates an operating system that Apple calls tvOS, it is currently in version 11.

To create Apps for Apple TV, all you need is a Mac and the Xcode IDE. An IDE is an integrated development environment, or what is the same, a tool that integrates everything necessary to develop software. In this case, to create software for Apple platforms we will use Xcode. Also, as a programming language we will use Swift.

Creating Apps for Apple TV does not differ much from creating Apps for iOS or even for macOS, Apple’s development system is becoming more unified, and it is likely that in the near future, it will be even more so, since it has been rumored since For a couple of years, the unification of environments is getting closer, so that we can develop a single App and this application can be used on iOS, tvOS, and macOS with a single development.

Until then, let’s settle for creating Apps freely for an operating system that has been with us very little, specifically since 2015. Welcome to the development of Apps for Apple TV.
