Apple has bought Barcelona’s Vilynx, for an amount close to 50 million dollars, about 42.5 million euros. The operation was closed during the first months of this year, although it is not until now when it has come to light.
Vilynx: the artificial intelligence that learns from videos
As Vilynx CFO explained to us in 2018, this startup was born in Barcelona in 2013 with the aim of helping its users to understand the content of videos and extract data from them as an effective method of classification.
And it is that after the immense amount of existing videos on the internet, the fact of being able to organize the information became a great challenge that Vilynx knew how to face.
A little later, in 2016, its technological development was launched on the market in the form of two tools: one dedicated to make automated 5 second summaries with the most relevant moments of a video before downloading it, and another capable of tagging automatically what appears in a video, with what has been created the largest database of tagged videos in the worldwhile creating summaries and personalized recommendations for users.
Over time, Vilynx has become a powerful artificial intelligence platform that is capable of learning by itself, since it not only extracts the content of the videos (images, audio and text) but also this unsupervised self-study manages to scale their knowledge to create connections between concepts to reach beyond the content.
Vilynx’s powerful neural network is capable of learn from the videos to then create patterns that can be applied to countless objectives, because Vilynx is capable of understanding the video content of the media so that the search is better and faster, or also create recommendations for the audience based on their usage habits.

The idea of the Cupertino giant is that the 50 persons that make up the company’s team continue in this new stage at Apple, including the co-founder and chief technology officer of Vilynx, Elisenda Bou-Balust. Apple will keep the Vilynx office in Barcelona and intends to make it one of the company’s leading artificial intelligence research and development centers in Europe.
Until now, the startup had its headquarters in Barcelona but had offices in Silicon Valley. In the American market they had established themselves as an Artificial Intelligence company for Mediaand achieving recognition from Gartner in this area.
