Interview with Belena Gaynor, Digital Manager of Operación Triunfo

There are many differences between the content you publish on Instagram, Twitter or YouTube. How is the strategy proposed in the different OT channels? How do you decide what is published on which network and with what approach?

Our main rule is give our followers everything they want to see. Therefore, Youtube becomes our main source of contentand from there we drive traffic from the rest of our social networks.

And very important! We must always take into account who our audience is and communicate with them with the same language.

Are there differences between the followers in each of them (profiles, way of interacting…)? Which one is your favourite?

Of course! Users behave very differently between different platforms. On Twitter they are much more demanding and even in many cases… hurtful They do not hesitate to criticize and insult under anonymous profiles and that sometimes touches morale a little, but very little, because we already have the “hater” profile under control.

My favorite is Youtube, without a doubt, followed by Instagram.

Doing a quick count, the different OT social profiles accumulate more than a million and a half followers. Does that responsibility weigh when it comes to doing your job?

Of course. There are many people who are aware of the official accounts of the program and always there is pressure and responsibility to do things the best you can. Sometimes we fail, and it’s normal. We are human, and in the end that shows for the good and for the bad.

This year we have had the “mariconez case”, but last year there were also controversial moments… and I suppose that this year we will still see some more. How are these “crises” managed?

We always act from maximum transparency. It is important to be honest with an audience that supports us 24 hours a day throughout the duration of the program and the least they deserve is always the truth.

So when they happen crises are always solved at the point where they originate, which is normally on the 24-hour channel. And from the rest of social networks the message is reinforced so that it reaches all users.

Apart from these controversial moments, a community as massive as yours also lives with trolls of all kinds. How do you manage them? What is your main advice for the CMs who live with them every day?

Well, it depends on the day you have… The truth! If you have a warrior day… Respond! I love to respond and convert haters into fans… Normally when you answer them they get scared or excited because what they really wanted is a little attention.

But if you have a thick day… Let it go. Normally the dramas on Twitter are over in a day.

How is the treatment with the contestants? How do you value their skills in social networks? What kind of advice do you give them so that they can use them now that they begin their life as influencers?

Well, I only dealt with them before the contest began to explain how the mobile issue would go and when I went up to the Academy to reinforce the message so they wouldn’t forget. They are wonderful and they are much better adapted to social networks than last year. They’re doing super well, and when they come out I’ll give each of them a few tips so that they can be great artists as well, good!

Beyond OT, you are also an influencer, with a YouTube account in which you accumulate 60,000 followers, with all kinds of content. How did you decide to become a YouTuber? How has your channel evolved in this time?

Well, I started making videos in 2011 because I loved what I was doing and I said… why not try it? And little by little that little big family grew. I love uploading things of any kind and knowing that someone had a good time watching it. The channel has been evolving with me and my followers and even though I don’t have a lot of subscribers, I I am super proud of everything I have achieved thanks to the YouTube Channel.

A curiosity: you have two Twitter accounts, one more personal and the other more professional… do you always manage to separate these two worlds?

I try and there are many times when I do succeed but sometimes I don’t. In the end it is inevitable because Bethlehem () and Belena Gaynor () we are the same person, the only thing is that the second is a little crazier than the first and on top of that it is recorded.

Imagine that we take a trip back in time. What advice would you give to Belén in 2008?

In 2008 he was 15 years old… And the advice I would give him would be: “Always do what you feel is right and don’t ask anyone. It is better to ask forgiveness than permission.”

And a little more difficult: How do you imagine the social media world will evolve between now and 2023? What will be the next great revolution in this field?

Probably all the platforms that we are used to nowadays they become paid and new ones appear that are much improved and free that will captivate our hearts. And honestly, I hope to be one of the creators!
