Nobody has been able in all of 2019 with Cabrales cheese. Except for himself, because not only did it remain the most expensive cheese in the world, but the Guinness World Records has just recognized that the auction of the last edition of the Cabrales Contest, held on the last Sunday of August last year, has meant a new record, by paying 20,500 euros for 2 kilos of cheese, as they have been able to certify and include in their record book this morning.
The XLIX edition of the Cabrales Cheese Contest broke all imaginable records. Catering establishments from Asturias, Madrid, and Dubai bid in an epic auction that hopes to be repeated this year on the last Sunday of August in celebration of half a century of the cheese competition, being one of the oldest and most important in Spain.
The winning piece of the Cabrales Cheese Contest 2019 became the most valued in the world for the price reached at the auction, as recently certified by Guinness World Records. Never before had 20,500 euros been paid for two kilos of cheese (10,250 euros/kilo), in a dispute in which 15 national and international establishments participated.
The president of the Protected Designation of Origin, Jéssica López, is “delighted that we have reached half a century of the event’s history with a good level of recognition, especially by hospitality professionals and consumers, who they have more and more knowledge and know that the Denomination of Origin is the only one that guarantees the origin and that the cheese is an authentic Cabrales”.
The Cabrales Cheese Contest that was held on August 25, 2019 in Arenas de Cabrales has just gone down in history. After the contest, in which a piece from Quesería Arangas was declared the winner, the auction began to bid for the winning piece. The establishments participating in the fight for cheese in the historic bid were Carús Casa de Comidas (Aravaca, Madrid), Carlos Tartiere (Madrid), Casa Pedro (Parres), Casa Román (Gijón), Cenador de los Canónigos (Cangas de Onís ), Cocina Cabal (Oviedo), Doña Concha (Oviedo), El Castañeu (Arenas de Cabrales), El Ñeru (Madrid), Hotel Restaurant Marqués de la Moral (Naveces), La Cabana (Oviedo), Ramón Grill (Gijón), Seville’s (Dubai), La Montera Picona cider house (Gijón).
