Change the size of the letters you see in Windows

There are several ways to be able to do this. The ideal is the first change the scale, so that everything appears bigger to us. However, there are also other little tricks to achieve it. The important thing is to try until we find the one that best suits our needs.

Precisely for all this, we are going to talk about some of the fastest methods that you can use when adjusting this font size. So you can use the one that interests you the most in each case, or at least the one that is most comfortable for you. The important thing here is that we have the possibility of adjusting this important element when using it for many hours on our PC, we are referring to the text. Otherwise, in the future, our vision may pay for it, something that can directly affect our health.

Change screen scale

Windows set by default a scale value that corresponds to 100%. This is the original size of the elements, and with it we will get the icons and letters to be consistent with the screen resolution that we have configured.

By changing the scale we can make the letters (and all the other elements) bigger or smaller without changing the monitor resolution at any time. Thus, this change will only affect the size of the elements, but we will be able to continue using our preferred resolution, for example, when watching movies, photos or playing games.

In Windows 10

To modify this parameter, the first thing we must do is enter the menu of Windows settings 10. And we can do this with the keyboard shortcut Windows + I. Once there we will go to the “System” > “Screen” section, and we will find the “Scale and distribution” section, which is what interests us.

In the case of wanting to make the letters bigger to be able to read without problems, what we must do is simply open the selector box and choose the size percentage we want give him. We can choose from a scale of 100% to one of 175%. When we select a value higher than the one we have by default, we will see how the letter gets bigger.

Otherwise, that is, if the letter we have in Windows is too large and we want to make it smaller, the process is the same. We must open the scale selector box and choose that we want to place it at 100%. Windows won’t let you put it smaller than that.

With each change, fonts and icons are redrawn from scratch, so they are adjusted to the new size. Nothing will be pixelated or blurry. We will simply see it larger than normal.

Advanced scale settings

Until now we have shown you the values that Microsoft proposes by default to use in its Windows system in regards to font sizes. But it may be the case that we are not convinced by these increases that we can use comfortably and automatically through the Settings application. This increase that we can initially establish reaches up to 125%.

However, we must bear in mind that we can also use the advanced scaling settings to increase this size a little more. To do this, click again with the right mouse button on the desktop. We select the Display settings option and in the section called Scale and distribution we find the option that says Advanced scale settings.

Here we already have the possibility to select Correct the scale of the applications. In this way, in Customize the scale, we only have to type an established value between 100 and 500. As you can imagine, the larger it is, the larger we will see the texts in the Microsoft operating system.

Of course, today for all these changes to become effective we will have to apply ourselves and restart the computer in its entirety. We must bear in mind that, if we set very high values in this regard, it is advisable to have a high-definition monitor, otherwise it could become annoying. And it is that the larger the font that we have specified, the larger the letters of the texts in Windows. Hence, we should have a large-format, high-resolution screen.

In Windows 11

While Windows 11 has the ability to automatically scale the screen to ensure that screen elements such as text, icons, the browser, etc. are always the correct size and legible, the truth is It is that it cannot always be to our liking, so we must carry out the configuration manually.

To change the scale size of a screen in Windows 11 using the recommended settings we must open the Settings menu, pressing the Windows + I key combination. Later we click on System, on the left side of the screen and select Screen on the menu on the right.

This takes us to a screen where we find the Scale and layout section. Through its drop-down menu, we can select the configuration we need, for example 100%, 125%, 150% and 175%. Once we have completed these steps, the new configuration scale will be applied automatically. Although it is not mandatory, we may need to restart our computer to ensure that the settings are applied correctly.

It is also possible to configure the scale in a custom way. While we shouldn’t change this setting unless necessary because this can cause text and apps to become ineligible. If we assume the risk, click on Scale and a new screen will appear. At the top we find the section on customize the scale. Here we can set the custom size of the scaling between 100% and 500%.

Finally, we click on the Check button located on the right side for the changes to be carried out. Finally, we log out of the system and log back in to use the new scale.

change resolution

Another option that we can resort to, in case the scale level does not convince us, is change resolution. The higher the resolution, the smaller the pixels on the screen. And if we add that the screen is very large, everything will be much smaller than normal. We will even have trouble reading.

Here we must take into account that not all screens or graphics that we have installed on the PC have support for the same resolutions. Generally and to obtain the better user experience on Windows systems, Microsoft’s own software recommends a specific resolution to use. However, even though it is the most suitable for playing or working with the computer, sometimes we cannot see the texts displayed on the screen well.

Therefore, at this point we must take into consideration that, in order to increase the size of said texts, we should reduce the default resolution used in Windows. Although the quality of the images decreases, we will be able to read the texts that appear in the operating system much better.

We can adjust, if we want, the scale of the system. However, we can also choose to directly change the resolution. If we keep the ratio of the monitor (which is generally 21:9) the resolution will be compatible. Of course, if we are going to do other things later, such as play, it is necessary to configure the highest resolution that we can use within the game to obtain the best possible quality.

We can change the resolution from the same section as the scale. Or also from the software of our graphics card.

use the magnifying glass

Windows comes standard with a wide variety of accessibility tools. And one of them is the application of magnifying glass. If we continue to see very small letters, and above all we have a vision problem, the magnifying glass will help us to see the section where we have very small letters or icons, but in a big way. We can adjust different zoom levels, and several different views. In addition, the magnifying glass will follow the mouse to easily follow a large reading without getting lost.

It is worth mentioning that this is a functionality that is specially designed for those who have major eye problems. Actually, it is not a real increase in the texts that we find on the screen in the operating system. This is a feature that acts as a conventional magnifying glass, that is, it makes us see what we are aiming at bigger, but in reality it does not modify the original content at all. This could be said to be the opposite of what happens when we modify the size of the font on windows or in any other application.

If we don’t like the magnifying glass of Windows itself, we can resort to another of the different programs that exist for the same purpose and that, normally, tend to be more complete.

It is true that for most users, the use of the function called Magnifying Glass in Windows can be somewhat exaggerated or even uncomfortable. However, it must be taken into account that many users who normally work with their computers have serious vision problems, so this tool can get them out of a lot of trouble on a day-to-day basis. In addition, it must be taken into account that Microsoft has been improving and perfecting it with the passage of time and the versions of the operating system.

Change the font size in the program

The first two methods allow us to change the font size for all Windows. However, surely there are times when we are not interested in doing so. It is possible that what we want to do is change the font size of a specific program.

Most of the programs that we can download and use in Windows are compatible with this feature. For example, Chrome, Edge and Firefox allow us to increase the font size in the browser without having to modify the scale of the operating system. Also Word and PDF viewers (such as Sumatra or Acrobat) allow us to make these elements larger with their corresponding zoom tool.

Therefore, in these cases the best we can do is look for the corresponding function of the font size in the configuration of the application in question. From there we only have to try different text sizes, now we can adapt what we see on the screen to our needs or tastes. If what we want is to increase the font size in a text editor, for example, Word, while maintaining the font size in Windows, we can resort to a little trick that we can use in practically any application. This trick consists of holding down the Control button while we rotate the mouse wheel backwards (towards you). When we find the desired font size, we just have to release the Control button. To return to the original view, hold down the Control button again and slide the mouse wheel forward until it returns to the desired position.

We can also use this trick in other applications such as Photoshop, GIMP or any other…
