Cola Cao or Nesquik, which is better? The OCU puts an end to the eternal doubt (but wins a white mark)

Beach or mountain, beer or wine or Madrid or Barcelona are some of the most difficult debates in humanity. Those who have raised more than one conflict, and can lead to divorces, separations from friends or family quarrels. Some complicated disputes where the war for one of the two best-known brands of cocoa powder in the world is also framed. Choosing sides between Cola Cao or Nesquik has always been a close contest, which now the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has tried to put an end to… although (warning, spoiler) they are not healthy at all and there are three brands, , which are considered better.

From usual for the little ones in the house, to a pleasant luxury on those cold winter nights. Cocoa powder, mostly used as a solvent in milk, is one of the most consumed products in all Spanish homes. A food that is popularly known as Cola Cao or Nesquik, depending on the reference brand of each user.

And it is that the battle that these two companies have waged over the years, especially in Spain since it is the place of origin of Cola Cao (Nesquik belongs to the Swiss Nestle), is worthy of analysis. With design battles for their boats, advertisements with totally recognizable songs and characters, lumps or no lumps, or different varieties of the product, one company or another has tried to reach as many consumers as possible.

Many of the cocoa powders contain more than 65% sugar in their total product

A debate that the OCU has tried to put an end to, although it will continue to be on everyone’s lips. Of course, noting that most contain a high percentage of sugar (more than 65%) so their intake is not healthy, the organization continues to ask that the ads of all these brands be prohibited since they are aimed at children.

But once with all the options at hand, the OCU relies on responsible consumption to review that the best are those that show 100% average cocoa content. Property that classifies them as “pure”, ensuring that they do not contain added sugars, only those that cocoa already contains, there are hardly any additives and the fiber appears more naturally.

Alcampo has the best on the market

For this reason, the organization reflects that the best of all its analysis is that of Auchan (Alcampo) prepared with cocoa. An A-rated product that provides 319 kilocalories per 100 grams, 25 grams of fiber per 100 grams of the item and only has 2 grams of sugar per 100. Private label, and costs 2.57 euros.

After this, the other two that surpass all those of Cola Cao or Nesquik are the Valorcao a la Taza, from Valor, and the Caobon, from Mercadona. Both also rated as A, in the case of the first it has 0% added sugars, provides 276 kilocalories and has 10.2 grams of fiber. For its part, the Valencian chain provides 293 kilocalories and carries 5 grams of sugar and 22 of fiber, for every 100 grams. In addition, the Value, hovering around 2 euros, while the second and worth 2.9 euros.

Cola Cao, less unhealthy than Nesquik

Already in fourth place, one of the brands that fight for the battle of popularity does appear. With AvenaCao, Cola Cao manages to position itself above its great competitor, which it also leaves far behind since Nesquik does not have any of the ten best cocoa powders for the OCU. In addition, the Spanish company also enters this classification with four other derivatives such as Cola Cao Noir, Cola Cao 0% added sugars with fiber, Cola Cao 0% added sugars and pure Cola Cao.

However, and despite the fact that they have a better rating than others, the OCU notes that Cola Cao does not include, in most of its products, the nutritional information for every 100 grams on its label, as established by the . Placing it for every 100 milliliters of that cocoa powder already dissolved in milk, the institution encourages changing this data to provide greater transparency.

Finally, the other two cocoas that are among the top ten are also private label. Auchan Bio 100% cocoa, again from Alcampo, and Vital Cocoa Soluble 0%, from Dia, are the other two great solvents that represent less unhealthy properties.

In this way, the OCU fights for cocoa powder to Cola Cao, although always reflecting those amounts that are harmful to the little ones that they contain inside. Ingredients that are always encouraged to eliminate because, as in its original packaging, Cola Cao has 70 grams of added sugar per 100 grams, while Nesquik has 75 per 100 grams of product.
