GIS course #1. GIS or GIS? What are they and what are they for? – .com

In the first class of the GIS introduction course we are going to learn what Geographic Information Systems are, who they are for and what they are for.

We live in the Big Data era, in fact, we have always considered the importance of databases. The customer database, a museum’s catalog of works of art, a library’s database or the heritage catalog of an autonomous community, for example. But what if we added a geographic coordinate to each of the records in that database?

Next we will see what a GIS or GIS is, and we will break down its definition to understand it in depth. We will also see what type of professionals these applications are aimed at. Can it be used by marketing professionals or graphic designers for example? We will see it below. Let’s go for it!

You have already seen it, behind the GIS there is a philosophy that the only thing that it intends is to help create stories with maps. And anyone who wants to tell one of those stories is the right person to use a GIS application.

Although a couple of decades ago it was necessary to have a very powerful computer, which was not available to everyone, and software licenses that only large institutions could afford, today anyone can generate cartographic information. He can do it from home with his computer, and even in the field or from the street with a tablet or his mobile phone.

I suggest you go to your search engine and type “GIS applications” and the subject that you like the most, for example “history” or “humanitarian aid”, to give an example. You will find a lot of articles telling about the applications of GIS. Switch to images and look for some examples of the maps made for these themes. Are there maps on your theme? Do you think you could contribute something new or tell the story you have in your head with a map? Think about what the goal of that map might be.
