Google My Activity: how much Google knows about you

Google My Activity is the new service that stores (chronologically) all the information provided by the user through the Internet and where any of the Google services is present, from YouTube searches to Google Maps, for example, or applications running on Android, Facebook activity, etc.

It is the user himself who must activate Google My Activity, and he will be able to erase any stored trace that he wants to get rid of. But even if it is not activated, Google will still save the user’s data.

How does Google My Activity work?

Once logged into Google, My Activity can be accessed through this address: Google My Activity shows all user history: searches performed, sites visited, Google products launched, etc. What this tool does is present a detailed report with the information and online activity of the user.

The My Activity page appears with a search bar through which you can search for any term related to the user’s online activity. For example, if we search through the name of a music group, the page would refer us to YouTube videos of that music group, which the user would have seen or searched for.

How to erase my footprint? We already commented that the user can delete any stored trace that he wants to get rid of. For this there is, at the top of the screen, a drop-down menu in which the option appears: “Delete activity by”. In this tab you can select the date range, or delete all the information saved by Google. According to some media, from Google they comment that: “The idea is to give people control of what they want to be hosted and what they don’t.”

Why this Google tool?

Google works with our information and uses it in real time to, based on it, adapt in a personalized way the online advertisements that it shows. Something that until now was done through cookies. Since we create any Google account (Gmail, Facebook accounts, Google Maps, etc.) we are generating data about ourselves and about what we like.

With Google My Activity all this data is revealed in a transparent way. And Google will be able to offer better experiences to its users, providing them in an easier way with everything they are interested in.
