How much melatonin (according to science) should be taken to prevent and combat Covid-19?

The MARGen Clinic in Granada recommended the consumption of melatonin during the first stages of the pandemic to prevent and combat Covid-19. A thesis that has confirmed a recent American study that has been published in the journal

This work, carried out among 26,779, concludes that the probability of giving a positive result in a PCR test for Covid-19 is reduced by 28% among people treated with melatonin. This difference, according to the same study, is even more significant in the African-American population, where it reaches 52%. Likewise, the absence of secondary adverse effects and an additional benefit that extends to the protection of women against adenomyosis and endometriosis and of people of both sexes against different types of cancer are other arguments in favor of the use of melatonin .

The Granada researchers from the MARGen clinic were pioneers in recommending the use of melatonin both in the prevention and treatment of the disease and thanks to their recommendations its impact has been reduced. Jan Tesarik, doctor and director of the MARGen Clinic, explained to this medium that melatonin was effective against Covid-19 thanks to its quadruple effect: a strong antioxidant, a strong anti-inflammatory, a modulator of the immune defense against viral infections and a direct antiviral action.

The recommended dose by the MARGen Clinic to prevent viral infections is 4-6 mg per day. Drugs with a maximum of 2 mg of melatonin do not require a doctor’s prescription. Keep in mind that this hormone induces sleep, so it should be taken before bed (between 30 minutes and 1 hour).

Precisely, the induction of sleep is the best known effect of melatonin. However, there are many other effects such as: protection of fertility in women and men, protection against complications of pregnancy and Alzheimer’s disease, or inhibition of different types of cancer (breast, colon, lung, prostate, and others).

Can melatonin be obtained through diet?

Melatonin is synthesized by the body. However, it is a capacity that decreases with age. In these cases, its own melatonin must be supplemented with that provided from outside (food or medication). Melatonin precursors are found in various foods, such as oatmeal, cherries, corn, red wine, tomatoes, potatoes, nuts, plums, and rice. However, with advancing age, or with the rhythm of night work, these precursors will not help much. To achieve adequate melatonin levels in these cases, the safest solution is to take medications with melatonin, cheap and easily available in pharmacies, even without a prescription.
