Discover how to manage push notifications in your browser. Push notifications allow apps, websites, and some browser extensions to send you alerts, personal messages, and other notices. These notices may be delivered to your computer or handheld device, even when your browser and related applications are not active.

Manage push notifications in your favorite web browser

Most push notifications provide a way to control which sites and web applications can communicate with you in this way by using the Push API or a related standard.

Here’s how to modify these settings on popular desktop and mobile browsers.

Google Chrome push notifications

The method of managing push notifications for Chrome on an Android device is different from other operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Chrome OS.

FOR ANDROID

To manage push notifications on an Android phone or tablet:

Select the menu of Chrome indicated by three dots placed vertically and located in the upper right corner of the browser window.

From the dropdown menu, select Setting

In the Configuration of Chrome, select Site Settings .

On the screen Setting of place scroll down and select Notifications .

The following two settings are offered by turning the switch on and off:

ask first : The default option. Requires your permission to allow a site to send a push notification.

locked – Prevents all sites from sending push notifications through Chrome.

To allow or deny notifications from individual sites, select the lock icon that appears on the left side of the Chrome address bar when you visit the site. Then touch Notifications and select Allow either Block .

FOR WINDOWS, MAC OS X, LINUX AND CHROME OS

To allow or block push notifications on Windows, Mac OS X, Chrome OS, and Linux:

Select the menu of Chrome located in the upper-right corner of the browser window and indicated by three stacked dots.

From the menu, select Setting . Or go to the Chrome address bar and enter chrome://settings .

When you see the screen Configuration of Chrome, scroll down and select Advanced .

In section Privacy & Security select Content Settings .

When you see the screen content setting of Chrome, scroll down and select Notifications .

In the settings of Notifications activate the switch ask before sending to tell Chrome to prompt you for a response each time a site tries to send a notification to the browser. This is the default and recommended setting.

Below are two sections: Block Y Allow . Use them to affect push notifications from certain sites.

Push notifications are not sent while browsing in incognito mode.

MozillaFirefox

Here’s how to manage push notifications in Mozilla Firefox for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux:

Go to the address bar, type about: preferences and press Get in .

Scroll down to the section permissions and to the right of Notifications select Setting .

Firefox offers the ability to block notifications entirely, including related permission requests. To disable this feature, select the check box Block new requests that ask to allow notifications .

Select Save Changes to make your configuration permanent.

You may need to restart Firefox for the new settings to take effect.

Microsoft Edge

To manage push notifications for Microsoft Edge on a Windows computer:

In the section permissions of website and select Manage .

Safari

To manage push notifications in Safari on Mac OS X:

In the menu of Safari select preferences .The keyboard shortcut is Command + , (eat).

Select Websites located in the top row.

In the left pane, select Notifications .

By default, Allow websites to request permission to send push notifications is enabled. These sites are stored and listed on this screen, along with the permission level you granted. Accompanying each site are two options, Allow either Deny

Select the desired option for each site or leave it as it is.

At the bottom of the notifications there is an additional option, Remove which allows you to remove saved preferences for one or more sites.

When an individual site’s settings are deleted, that site prompts you for action the next time you try to send a notification.
