How to Recover Deleted Safari Data and History

Recently, one of my friends was browsing the web through the Safari browser. Once the browsing session was complete, he decided to delete the browsing data from the last hour.

However, he forgot to check the time range (which was set to All time) and thus accidentally deleted all browsing history to date.

Turns out he wasn’t the only one, and there were a plethora of similar queries lining the web where users are looking for a method to recover their deleted Safari history and data.

For example, some concerned parents wanted to get hold of their child’s browsing history, which the child would always end up deleting just before closing the browser.

Along the same lines, some users were unable to remember a particular site they had visited a few weeks ago and had deleted their history as well. All in all, there could be quite a few reasons why one would need to recover deleted Safari history and data.

Therefore, in this guide, we will share some nifty methods to restore deleted Safari history, and data could be carried out, on both your iPhone and Mac.

Recover with iCloud Web

If you have synced your iPhone data with iCloud, then you will have stored all app data including Safari. As a result, you can quickly recover deleted Safari data directly from the cloud.

Here are the steps to recover Safari bookmark data from iCloud web :

  • Open the session with Apple ID .
  • Switch to tab Advanced .
  • Click on the tab restore bookmarks
  • Select the bookmarks to retrieve and press the button Restore
  • Click on Restore in the confirmation dialog.

Remember that you can only recover the bookmarks if we deleted them in the last 30 days. Safari data is kept for only 30 days after deletion. Anything during that period is deleted.

iCloud Sync Backup

If you have backed up all your device data to iCloud, you can quickly restore it to your iPhone. Doing so will recover all app data, including Safari. And with that, you will also be able to recover deleted browser data.

However, you will first need to factory reset your device before you can restore this data.

Proceed with caution, and this method will completely wipe the data between the last backup and the current one.

Here are the steps to erase iPhone data and recover from iCloud :

  • Start the setting of telephone and open the settings menu general .
  • go to Restore and select the option Erase all content and settings
  • Wait until the data reset is complete on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Sign in to your Apple ID Y select the backup contains deleted history.

The restore process will now begin and may take a few minutes. Once done, you will recover all your browser history and synced data.

While this process does its job quite effectively, its requirement to wipe all data from your device and then restore it is time consuming.

iTunes Backup

Similar to the method mentioned above, if you have backed up your data to iTunes, you could quickly restore it to your device. But as before, you will have to delete your iPhone data first and then restore the backup.

Here are the steps to recover iPhone or iPad data from iTunes backup :

  • Open the itunes application on Mac and then connect your device.
  • Select your iPhone / iPad and click on restore backup.
  • Select the backup that you think has your browser data.

Once the restore is complete, you will recover your browser data, along with all the data from the other app.

Recover Safari History and Data Mac

Similarly, you can recover deleted Safari history and data on your Mac. Now let’s see the steps to do the same on your Mac.

These are the two different methods that will help you to get the deleted browser data on your Mac.

iCloud data sync

If you are using the same linked Apple account on your iPhone and Mac and the data of the former is stored in iCloud, then you have the option to restore browser data from your iOS device to your Mac. We can take the help of iCloud in this process.

Time Machine Backup

You can also recover deleted Safari history and data using Apple’s built-in backup and restore feature.

All records of your previously visited sites are stored within the history.db database file. Thus, you could restore this file and in turn recover deleted browser data.

Here are the steps to restore Time Machine backup for Safari browsing history data :

  • Open the Finder write the location of the safari library to below .~/Library/Safari
  • Browse to and select the history.db database file.
  • Click on timemachine in the menu bar and select Enter Time Machine
  • You can also access Time Machine from Spotlight search.
  • Within Time Machine, select the History.db file.
  • hit the button Restore

Time Machine will now start to restore all the data present within that database file. Once done, you will recover all your browser data.

The only caveat with this method is that you should have created a Time Machine backup beforehand. If you haven’t, then this approach might be useless.

Conclusion: Restore Deleted Safari History

We conclude the guide on how you can recover your deleted Safari history and browser data. Please note that there are some third-party applications that claim to perform such a task in just a few clicks.

But there is always an element of risk in giving these third-party services access to your browser data. Therefore, we decided to omit mentions of those apps entirely.

The instructions we have listed for iPhone and Mac devices involve only the standard apps.

That said, iCloud data proved to be the savior in my case for both devices.
