IberBlue Wind launches to develop 2,000 MW of offshore wind power in Spain

IberBlue Wind, an alliance specialized in the promotion of floating offshore wind farm projects, today starts its activity in the Iberian Peninsula where it intends to position itself as a benchmark player in the offshore market. The company was born with three partners in the capital: the Irish Simply Blue Group and the Spanish Proe Consultores (Grupo Amper) and FF New Energy Ventures.

According to its vice president, Adrián de Andrés, the objective is to promote installations in Spain and Portugal with a capacity of 2,000 MW. To do this, the new company -which was established last April- has its focus on Andalusia and Galicia as well as the central and northern areas of Portugal.

IberBlue Wind aspires to become a park developer as its intention is to dispose of the projects at the time of construction.

The new company has the experience of the Irish company Simply Blue, which is already developing a 100 MW offshore wind farm in Wales, as well as the strong presence in Spain of FF New Energy Ventures, which has already developed almost 3,000 MW of solar and wind energy land.

500 MW projects

According to De Andrés to elEconomista.es, the intention is to carry out 500 MW projects in order to take advantage of economies of scale. The company hopes to use wind turbines of between 15 and 18 MW to reduce costs.

The director of this new company also insists that Spain is behind in the offshore wind sector. The necessary regulation for the start-up is not yet on the table, including the approval of the Marine Space Planning Plans (POEM) and he considers that the Government is not being ambitious in this regard.

De Andrés recalls that the Offshore Wind Roadmap sets a target of between 1 and 3 GW by 2030 and the manager considers that it should be at least 3 GW by that date with the intention of being able to aspire to be in the front line against plans ranging from 50 GW in the United Kingdom to 20 GW in France.

At the moment, the company has not yet made a decision on the type of floating technology that they are going to use in their parks in Spain and Portugal. In the Welsh case, the company uses Principle Power technology (the same one that is used in the floating park that already exists and is in operation in Portugal) but is analyzing developments with cement.

The company is already making approaches to local authorities and associations with the intention of being able to know their positions before launching the first projects in Spain, an extreme that they hope will take place at the end of this year.

IberBlue Wind also wants to increase the weight of local production in its marine parks and to get to know the land up close, it already has several offices in operation. Specifically, the ten people who currently make up the company’s team are divided between Bilbao, Madrid, Seville and Porto.
