FC Barcelona denies “categorically” that it has leaked Leo Messi’s contract, published this Sunday by the newspaper El Mundo, and announces legal action against the aforementioned newspaper for “the damages that this publication may cause”. According to information from the aforementioned newspaper, the contract of Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi with FC Barcelona amounts to 555,237,619 euros gross.
The formidable sum that Messi has signed would be received in four seasons – between 2017/2018 and the one in progress – until its expiration, on June 30, which makes it the “most expensive contract in the history of sport “.
Through a statement, the Barça club regrets that the contract “has come to light publicly”, since it is “an exclusively private document” and that it is governed by the principle of “confidentiality between the parties”.
Barcelona “categorically” denies any responsibility “in the publication of this document” and announces that it will take “appropriate legal action” against the newspaper El Mundo “for the damages that may be caused as a result of this publication.”
In addition, the Barça club expresses its “absolute support” for Lionel Messi, “especially in the face of any attempt to discredit his image and deteriorate his relationship with the entity where he has been trained, to the point of becoming the best player in the history of football” .
Almost 200 million in two astronomical premiums
“The total figure is the sum of a fixed salary, image rights, a series of multimillion-dollar premiums unpublished to date, allowances and a rosary of variables depending on various objectives,” reveals the information.
Per season, Leo Messi would earn 138 million euros gross between fixed and variable salary. In addition, the agreement included two bonuses (115,225,000 euros renewal bonus and 77,929,955 euros loyalty bonus).
At the level of net figures, after taxes, the information indicates that Leo Messi would have won 297 million euros as “net calculation” of this last contract, just over half compared to the gross figures.
Mahomes, last ‘pitch’ before Messi
In July 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs, current champions of the NFL (National Football League), announced the renewal until 2031 of their great star, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, with a contract that, according to US media, is around 500 million of dollars.
Mahomes will receive in those ten years a minimum of 477 million dollars (423 million euros) that could reach 503 million dollars (446 million euros) if he meets a series of objectives.
This agreement makes Mahomes the highest-paid player in NFL history, surpassing the one signed in 2019 by baseball player Mike Trout with the Los Angeles Angels for 12 years and 426.5 million dollars.
