Learn how to fix any problem, or error, in Word

To solve this problem, we just have to access the Windows configuration options, select Microsoft Office and click on Uninstall to open an assistant that will invite us to fix the applications that are part of this suite or to uninstall it completely. Since what we are interested in is repairing one of the applications, we click on the first option.

We can’t open a document

The reasons why Word does not allow us to open a document are very varied, since there are many possible causes of the problem.

The file includes an infected macro

The macros that we can use in all the applications that are part of Office, allow us to automate tasks in addition to performing actions that would otherwise be impossible. However, they are a potential risk to equipment since inside it can hide all kinds of viruses and malware. If we can’t open a specific Word document, it most likely contains some kind of virus.

The solution to this problem is to analyze the file with Windows Defender. If it does not find any virus and we do not know the person who sent us the document, we should be wary of the file and delete it completely from our computer.

faulty file

If we use templates to create documents and there comes a time when Word does not allow us to use it again, it is most likely that the application has been corrupted and, instead of showing the template file, it shows us a blank page. We can use the function open and repair Word before opening the document.

If we can’t open it, you should scan the computer with the tool chkdsk with the /s command so that Windows analyzes and repairs the bad sectors that the document that we cannot open is probably using.

The file is very big

Word has no specific limit to the maximum file size you can open, and is based solely on the power of your computer. If the equipment is very limited in terms of benefits and the file size is very high, during the process, Word will keep thinking and will not go beyond that. To try to open this document, the first thing we must do is close all apps that we have open on the computer to free up as much space as possible so that Word can allocate all available resources to open the document.

Word won’t let you type

The first thing to keep in mind is that Word, like all the other programs in the Office suite, are payment programs. In other words, to be able to use them we must either pay for an individual license that allows us to access the program, or subscribe to Microsoft 365, being able to always have the latest version of all the programs in the suite, as well as other benefits, such as 1TB of OneDrive storage.

As with any program, there are many ways to install Word for free, without paying, and without a license. One of them is to install a 30-day trial version during which we can use the program without limitations. Another, less moral, is to resort to false passwords or programs to bypass payment methods. This is against the program’s terms of use, and while Microsoft won’t take legal action against users, it will stop them from using the program.

For whatever reason, the reason why we can’t write in Word it is because we do not have a valid license associated with the program. Upon detecting this problem, Word automatically sets itself to read-only mode, allowing us to open DOCX documents that we download from the Internet, but under no circumstances will it allow us to edit these files.

At this point, the solution is very simple: get a genuine word license. After activating the program, all these restrictions will automatically be removed and we will be able to use the program again without any restrictions or problems. If we buy a license for one version, we can always use the programs without having to pay again. On the contrary, if we pay a subscription, we can use Word, Excel and other programs as long as we are punctual with the payment.

How to write in Word without paying

It may be the case that we do not want to pay. In that case, it is clear that the Office suite program is beyond our reach. But not all is lost. Microsoft has a version of its word processor that we can use for free from the browser: Word online. Although it is a somewhat more limited version than the desktop program, most of the functions will be available to us. And we will only need a Microsoft Account, and, to start using the program.

If we don’t want to use this version either, then we have no choice but to look for alternatives. Another online option that we can resort to is none other than Google Drive. And, if we prefer a free office suite to install on Windows, then the best alternative is LibreOffice.

incompatible format

Word is compatible with files in .docx and .doc formats, the formats in which this application allows us to create documents. But, in addition, it is also compatible with other types of formats, although it does not stand out especially for its compatibility. If when opening a document, Word does not show the message Format not compatible, it means that it is not a document created by Word or successfully exported to the format used by this application.

It is also possible that the file was corrupted during shipment. The solution to this problem is to ask the sender to resend the document to us. We can try to repair the file using third-party applications, but in the end, the result will almost always be the same.

The document has lost the format

When we open a text document in Word, the first thing the application does is read the font used to create it and format the text correctly. If we open a document, and we see how the document has lost its format, the text is not aligned correctly, the tables (if it includes them) are not well distributed in the document, it means that a font that is not available has been used on our computer, so Word cannot use it and, failing that, use the one established by default.

In order for the document to be displayed correctly and recover the format, we can request the font that has been used from the sender, since, otherwise, we will be forced to reformat the document again with the consequent loss of necessary time, especially if it is It’s a particularly long.

It opens in read mode and I can’t save the changes

There are three reasons why Word informs us that a document is read-only and does not allow us to save the changes or editions we make to the document.

we don’t have permissions

When the document that we open is being edited by another person and is not shared so that it can be edited by several people, when opening it, Word will show us a message informing us that the document is in reading mode. To be able to edit it together, we must request permissions from the system administrator.

The document is already open

This message is also displayed when we open the same file twice on the same PC. The solution to this problem is to close one of the instances that we have open and use the document that we previously had open.

The file is read-only

The third reason why Word does not allow us to save the changes we make to the file because it is a read-only file is because the file has properties set to read-only. To recover the editing permissions, we must close Word and access the file properties through the right mouse button and uncheck the Read Only box.

Not enough memory to open the file

This problem occurs when the equipment has too many apps open in the device’s memory and the virtual memory that the equipment has configured has reached the established limit. Windows, instead of closing applications to free memory as mobile operating systems do, will inform us of the event so that we can take action on the matter.

The solution is to close the applications that we have open in the background and that we are not using at that moment. If we need all the open applications in the background, we will have to expand the virtual memory of the device or allow the device to manage it automatically.

we can’t delete the file

When we drag a Word document that we have open to the trash, Windows will show us a message informing us that the file cannot be deleted. The reason is very simple, since as long as we have the file open on the computer, we will never be able to send it to the recycle bin. In order to delete the file, the first thing we must do is close Word and the document in question.

Word errors and how to fix them

The number of errors that Word does not display is not as high as Windows does, however, some of them are very annoying.

Error Word cannot open the global template (Normal.dot)

The solution to this problem is to directly restore the Normal.dot template, a template that contains the configuration that we have established in the application. This will erase all settings and recreate completely from scratch. To restore the template and reopen normally every time we open Word, we must access the command prompt through CMD.

ren %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplatesOldNormal.dotm Normal.dotm

You have made changes that affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save the changes?

If this message is displayed every time we close Word, which we can deactivate so that the changes are saved automatically, it is because we have opened a Word text document that includes a macro with a virus. To fix this problem, we need to scan the computer with Windows Defender or using another third-party antivirus application to detect the problem and fix it.

Another possible reason why this message is displayed is because some add-on that we have installed on our computer is interfering with the operation of Word. The solution to this problem is to recover a previous restore point, since if we have recently installed various applications, we will not be able to easily identify which application is the source of the problem.

Expired subscription / Renew subscription

The main reason is because the subscription has stopped being active because it has expired. The only solution to this problem is through contract this subscription again through the official Microsoft channels (if we do not want to have problems in the future using cheap keys that are sold online).
