Moderna’s vaccine: side effects, effectiveness and time to reach immunity

This August, the Spanish vaccination strategy is focused on the administration of doses from Pfizer and Moderna, the only two vaccines authorized for those under 40 years of age. Thus, , which until now had been much inferior to Pfizer.

How effective is the Moderna vaccine?

The executive director of Moderna, Stephane Bancel, has communicated this Thursday, collects Reuters, during the presentation of results for the second quarter that its vaccine against Covid-19 guarantees an effectiveness of around 93% for six months after the second dose, which showed little change with respect to the 94% efficacy reported in its original clinical trial. However, he said he still hopes booster shots will be needed before the winter season, as antibody levels are expected to decline.

Time to reach immunity with Moderna

Beyond the third dose, what is pertinent now is to administer the complete vaccination schedule to the largest possible population because it is the way to reduce the transmission of the virus and combat the Delta variant. Thus, the Moderna vaccine requires a time between doses of 28 days, seven more than Pfizer, and total immunity is achieved 14 days after the second dose, seven more than with Pfizer.
