It is one of the largest artificial holes in the world, with dimensions that exceed a kilometer in diameter and reach 525 meters deep. It is located in Central Siberia, in Russia, next to the city of Mirna. The hole was created for diamond mining due to the soil’s richness in precious stones and minerals.
To get an idea of its gigantic dimensions, almost forty of the longest trucks in the world could be introduced into this mine, one after another. A hole from which two million carats a year were obtained until it was closed after the diamonds ran out.
The discovery of this mine, in 1955, was a success for the then Soviet Union, which had several failed expeditions behind it since they began in the 1940s. The construction of this enormous hole was carried out under harsh climatic conditions, with temperatures below zero, but was successful in mining diamonds.
Now, this crater is one of the most mysterious areas and one that most attracts curious tourists. However, it poses a danger to all those who fly over it. The reason is the enormous suction force that drags the abyss of the hole, for this reason, the authorities have prohibited, after several helicopter accidents, flying over the area.
