The Seville company scoobic has been awarded the Best Innovation Award , the event that has brought together the most outstanding members of the Spanish logistics community in Barcelona for 3 days. An award that recognizes your aspiration to become a tool to improve lives in citiesthrough an innovative and surprising vehicle.
My plan was to interview Jose Maria Gomezthe CEO and founder of scoobic, the innovative electric motorcycle for parcel delivery in the city that his company, , has designed and that will be tested at the end of 2018 in Madrid. He was talking to one of the shareholders of the project, José María “Pocholo” Martínez Bordiú, and he gave me I do not know what interrupt.
When I got up the courage and we retired to a quieter place, inside the fair in which we were Pocholo joined. And I couldn’t miss the opportunity to have, exclusively, not only the CEO but also one of his promoters, together.
Both of them waste energy and a humanist objective sense in the project. It looks like a motorcycle. Well, it almost looks like a pallet truck (in fact it can work like one), but it really is “a device to improve humanity”. And although it sounds exaggerated, without this original spirit of going “a little further” a result so different from the usual would not have come out: a three-wheeled motorcycle that turns into a pallet jack to circulate in pedestrian areas, with an air decontamination system and a plan to help save lives through an app that connects them with emergencies when there is a heart attack nearby.
The delivery men, “heroes of our time”, will carry a defibrillator in their Scoobic…
Jose Maria Gomez …if this saves even one life, it will have been worth it.
What is Scoobic?
Scoobic is a motorcycle, a scooter, but capable of transporting 1,000 liters and 750 kilos of cargomuch more than a car, both with cold products (frozen) and at room temperature.
What novelties does it bring?
An unlimited autonomy, because it carries a removable battery system, and if you need it, you put the battery charged and do not wait a minute. In addition, it will be the first vehicle in the world that can access pedestrian streets, as it becomes a pallet truck. The first to arrive at the customer’s door, without the delivery man having to suffer carrying long distances.
In addition, he carries defibrillator As a latest novelty, it has a device that removes the smoke so that we do not breathe it: we compress that smoke in a machine developed by us, and we turn it into a zirconia, a diamond without economic value, but sentimental, and that we will give away in a ring, as a sign that your order, your purchase, has helped clean the air of the city
It is not that it does not contaminate, but that it decontaminates…
We are the first vehicle that cleans the air in the city.
But there is another element that is the most important of the model: The delivery man. Those people who work during the day, at night, at Christmas, carrying packages, suffering, and who are paid poorly and late. False self-employed, in pitiful conditions and who have to run around the city to try to bring home a salary.
Could it be said that your main engine is to improve the life of the dealer?
The main objective of Scoobic is give them a working tool that allows them to deliver more packages in less time, running less. No need to run. This is a vehicle that parks faster.
Between 20% and 40% of a delivery person’s time is spent looking for where to leave the van. with our vehicle will deliver 40% more packages, your company will earn 40% more money, and he will earn more by working much less. That is the goal: to dignify the dealer.
If also while that man is delivering his packages, save a life and is cleaning the air of the city, that man is a hero.
How did the idea for Scoobic come about?
Jose Maria Martinez Bordiu: We come from the motorcycle sector: José María is a fan of motorcycles and that is why this idea came up: we have been working on this project for two and a half years.
Jose Maria Gomez Scoobic was born two years ago with one goal: to devise the missing link between motorcycles and delivery vans. It’s like a motorcycle, but with the cargo capacity of a van, and it will make life easier for delivery people. Also, it doesn’t bother people: it’s electric, it doesn’t make any noise.
This motorcycle is the first product in a range of devices. His older brother, Mouse, is coming soon., which is a trailer microtruck, to distribute all kinds of merchandise in the center of cities. It has capacity for 12 pallets, and it is very small, very narrow. It has twelve wheels.
It amazes me how different it is from everything we are used to seeing…
Jose Maria Martinez Bordiu: There is a primary objective, which is to start helping the planet, combat global warming, and make the future more viable for our children. In addition, it has a built-in defibrillator, which can save a life. It is something worthwhile. Technically the vehicle has two wheels in front and one behind, which is the worldwide trend: It offers stability, security…
We want to work in Spain and throughout the world: there will be more and more people in the cities, people no longer go to the countryside. In the future there will be a number of these vehicles around the cities, delivering food and packages. I live in Ibiza and there they do not allow cars with gasoline to enter, it’s all electric.
What is your role as a shareholder and brand ambassador?
Jose Maria Martinez Bordiu: My role will be to travel the world, helping to sell the product. At Christmas we will launch it and start with the expansion.
What team do you have?
Jose Maria Gomez We are one, we started only three. We now have a team of twelve Engineers, In sevilla. We have had a lot of help from the Ministry of Economy, from the CDTI, we are very grateful to them.
Which are the next steps?
We already have all the permits to put ourselves on the streets. we will start in Madrid at Christmashand in hand with a large international logistics company, located in Spain, which we cannot reveal for now. The idea is to produce 1,000 units by 2019 and all of them have already been sold, at this same fair, the eDelivery Barcelona.
Aren’t you afraid that it’s easy to copy?
That is not a risk, it is a certainty: what is good is copied, and if they do not copy you, it is that you are not good. Another thing is that the copy is better than what we do. But we have 10 patentsthere is a lot of work behind it, they may copy us, but they will hardly be better than us.
Jose Maria Martinez Bordiu: Besides, we don’t do it to get rich: we do it for humanity, to make people happier.
