Price of electricity today, September 8, by the hour: when is it cheaper and when is it more expensive?

For this Thursday, September 8, the average price per megawatt hour in the ‘electric pool’ will be 155.94 euros/MWh. To this price, customers must add another 86.71 euros/MWh, from the compensation to the gas companies that will be paid by the consumers benefiting from the measure, the consumers of the regulated rate (PVPC) or those who, despite being in the free market, they have an indexed rate. Thus, the final average price will be 242.65 euros per megawatt hour (MWh).

This figure represents a rise of 11.6% compared to this Wednesday. Even so, it remains far from the historical prices of this week, when electricity cost an average of 476.39 euros/MWh during the day on Wednesday, being the second highest price in history for regulated rate customers linked to the wholesale market.

Prices are holding at constant levels during this week with uncertainty, pending what measures will be taken within the European Union to reduce energy consumption and contain the rise in prices. For the moment, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has presented a proposal to European governments: limit the price of Russian gas but also a solidarity fee for large European energy companies that will be redirected to vulnerable companies and households. .

Why does the price of electricity vary so much?

The main cause of the price fluctuations is that the price of gas is experiencing strong increases and its use is essential for the production of energy in the so-called combined cycle plants. Thus, any impact on the price of gas has an almost immediate impact on the price of electricity.

The impact of the ‘Iberian exception’

The Iberian mechanism, which entered into force on June 15, limits the price of gas for electricity generation to an average of 48.8 euros per MWh over a period of twelve months, thus covering the coming winter, a period in which energy prices are more expensive.

Specifically, the ‘Iberian exception’ sets a path for natural gas for electricity generation at a price of 40 euros/MWh in the initial six months, and subsequently, a monthly increase of five euros/MWh until the end of the measure .

Without the ‘Iberian exception’ mechanism in operation, the price of electricity in Spain would be 278.29 euros (35.64 euros more), 12.81% higher.
