The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Wednesday that Spain “will deliver offensive military material to the Ukrainian resistance”, thus making clear the “commitment” of its Executive in the response that must be given “to a European threat”.
In his appearance in the Congress of Deputies to report on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sánchez stated that Spain “has always understood that this attack is against Europe, its principles and values.”
“For this reason, we have always defended coordinated actions at the European level, not a sum of initiatives from each country. For this reason, we support the activation of the European Fund for Peace for the delivery of defensive and offensive weapons by the European Union to Ukraine I also want to remember that Spain is the fourth donor of this fund,” he stated.
He recalled that this has been his position and that of the Government, and he estimated that it is “the appropriate one.” “I firmly believe it. To a European threat, we must give a European, coordinated and united response. This is what the High Representative, Josep Borrell, asked of us, and Spain responded instantly to that call,” he reaffirmed.
“But, as I see that there are groups that question the commitment of the Government of Spain; and for me and for the Government, the unity of all is so important, so fundamental, I also want to announce that Spain will deliver military material to the Ukrainian resistance offensive”, he stated, which provoked applause in plenary.
After recalling that “Spain is a country that loves peace”, and that “we have very recent memories of the “no to war”, the President of the Government pointed out that “we should not be mistaken” because today the “no to the war of Iraq, is the “no to Putin’s war”.
