Systemic risk: what it is – Dictionary of Economics

Risk that the inability of a participant to meet its payment obligations in a system results in other participants also being unable to meet them, with possible contagion effects, such as significant liquidity or credit problems, which could jeopardize stability of the financial system. Such non-compliance may be caused by operational or financial problems.
