In Jalisco, a state located northwest of Mexico City, the Mexican essence is revealed with the most famous liquor that the Aztec country has given to the world: tequila. This famous alcoholic beverage, one of the most famous in the world along with gin, vodka, rum and whiskey, is born from the fermentation and distillation of the juice extracted from the blue agave (agave tequilana Weber, blue variety), has a denomination of origin and, although it is made in other Mexican states, it is in Jalisco where it gathers its enormous popularity. Information provided by the website of .
To be called tequila, it must have at least 51% agave, although the purest and most select have 100%. Thus, there are two categories of this liquor: tequila and 100% agave tequila. After its distillation, and depending on the actions carried out such as rest or aging, it is classified into five different classes:
White: is the direct result of distillation. It is transparent and is considered the purest.
Gold: it is a tequila to which some element is added to give it its golden hue. It can be natural oak or oak extract, glycerin and sugar-based syrup. Likewise, young Tequila is also the result of the mixture between white Tequila and Reposado and/or Añejo and/or Extra Añejo Tequila.
Reposado: It is the one that rests for at least two months in oak or oak barrels. It is the most consumed.
Añejo: It remains at least one year in oak or oak barrels whose capacity must not exceed 600 liters, it is darker than the reposado and its touches of wood are noticeable.
Extra Añejo: Matures for three years in barrels. It is the softest and most aromatic of all existing varieties.
We show you five of the best tequila brands made in Jalisco to accompany the moments you choose.
Gran Patron Piedra Extra Añejo
To produce this tequila, the best agaves from the Altos de Jalisco are selected, which are later cooked and crushed with a large wheel-shaped volcanic stone, just as it was done in the past. After distillation, it is aged for more than three years in new American and French oak barrels. It has a beautiful deep mahogany color, with sweet and soft aromas of fruit and fresh mushrooms, as well as citrus and toasted aromas conferred by its stay in the noble French oak. In the mouth it is sweet, rich and complex, combining a good herbaceous flavor with light vanilla.
Casamigos White and Reposado
A partnership of tequila-loving soulmates, actor George Clooney and businessman and former model Rande Gerber, in collaboration with Discovery Land Company founder Mike Meldman, have taken their passion for tequila to the next level with the creation of Casamigos. A truly brilliant attempt at crafting two of the best premium tequilas on the market. The brand has launched two types of tequila: Casamigos Blanco, with hints of vanilla, and Casamigos Reposado, with a caramel aroma. Both are made with the finest, hand-selected blue agaves grown in the rich red clay soil of the Altos de Jalisco. The Casamigos Blanco rests for two months, while the Reposado is aged for seven months in the best American oak barrels, which have been carefully reconditioned after use to contain the best premium whisky.
Jose Cuervo Traditional
This premium tequila is still made in the same way that the creator and founder of the brand, José Cuervo, did it in 1795: slow cooked and aged in oak barrels for four months. An authentic 100 percent agave tequila. Each year a limited quantity of this variety is produced, which is individually bottled, sealed and numbered, which makes each unit of tequila unique and unrepeatable. Pale yellow in color, herbaceous essences are presented on the nose with notes of green fruit, wood and a light touch of honey and flowers. In the mouth, the sweet character is confirmed, also perceiving a taste of oak wood. Its finish is long and warm.
Vintage Horseshoe
It is one of the most distinguished tequilas from Jalisco. It has been made since 1962 with 100 percent blue agave, following the traditional method and aged for 24 months in oak barrels (double what is required by Mexican law). Additional aging gives it a deep amber color, with intense vegetable aromas, hints of spices and cooked agave, toasted oak from the barrel and walnuts. It has a complex flavor of dried and roasted fruits, with a smooth and creamy finish.
Don Julio Aged Tequila
Aged in small batches in American white oak barrels for 18 months, Don Julio Añejo Tequila is a testament to the craftsmanship in creating a superior tasting aged tequila. It is light amber in color. Placed close to the nose, it releases subtle citrus aromas of lime and tangerine, with a rich hint of caramel. In the mouth, it is robust and complex, with expressions of cooked agave, spices, wild honey and caramel fused with the oak from the barrel. An intense, distinctive and complex tequila.
