The black rat spreads through 35 outbreaks in Madrid: these are the tips to prevent its expansion

New alert detected in Madrid due to a peculiar inhabitant who appears from time to time to sow chaos among the most phobic in the capital. The black or Barco rat has once again been located in up to 35 outbreaks, with a greater presence in the surroundings of the Méndez Álvaro station, for which reason the City Council has asked for extreme caution as well as a series of recommendations to prevent its further spread.

In the last colloquium of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), one of the issues that has attracted the most attention has been the increasing presence of rats in Madrid. This has been notified by the (Anecpla) warning that this phenomenon has been taking place in depth in the last two years, transmitting diseases such as leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis or hantavirus.

Linked to plagues since the Middle Ages, the rat has become one of the most feared inhabitants due to its peculiar appearance. More specifically, this specimen of black rat (rattus rattus), contrary to the gray or sewer rat that is seen in other European countries, its form of action is usually close to gardens and parks.

Its extinction is complicated since it usually inhabits places where pets and children frequent.

It is in the trees of these places where it nests with a similar resemblance to birds, which makes its extinction difficult also due to the proximity of children in these green spaces. In addition, its appearance is usually notified by the presence of droppings or gnawing, characteristics found in up to 35 outbreaks in the capital, most of them near the Méndez Álvaro bus station.

Of course, asking for peace of mind from the experts, they have advised not to throw garbage or food on the ground since this encourages their appearance and reproduction. For this reason, it is not advisable to feed pigeons or other species, since the remains of this food can remain scattered on the ground for later benefit of the rats.

What to do to fight the black rat

In it, a guide has been put forward as an aid detailing, among other matters, the following recommendations to help from citizen work to the extinction of this particular neighbor:

– Extreme care in waste management (garbage), the cornerstone of rat prevention in the city.

– Repair, seal all those cracks, fissures, “pipes” that could allow access to these small animals.

– Extreme care in food storage, a frequent favorite target of these rodents.

– Have warehouses, storage rooms, ordered and conveniently supervised.

– Indoors, professionals (pest control companies) should be responsible for establishing situation diagnoses and making corrective recommendations and treatments that are deemed appropriate.

– For light infestations in the domestic sphere, the citizen can opt for a self-control that could be successful to the extent that the aforementioned environmental principles are vigorously applied and that the rodenticides marketed as domestic are used very judiciously.
