The strike of carriers especially hits the food sector in the north and south of the country

The week of strike and carrier pickets is passing the biggest bill to the food sector in the north and south of the country, which also affects the supply of products from these origins to the rest of Spain, although Catalonia has avoided relevant problems so far supply.

In Mercabarna, this Friday half of the usual fish trucks have arrived, although the offer is 80% because there was merchandise that arrived on Thursday. There has been a lack of products from Galicia, especially mussels, and from the south of Spain, from where sardines, horse mackerel and anchovies have not arrived, according to the wholesale market.

In fruit and vegetables, 38% fewer trucks have entered than usual, but the supply is 80-90% compared to another Friday due to stocks arriving during the week. As in previous days, there is still a shortage of products from the south, especially peppers, courgettes, strawberries from Huelva and aubergines.

Also through the Port of Barcelona, half the trucks of merchandise have moved compared to any other Friday, and the distribution sector has more and more problems due to the prolongation of the protests by carriers.

In the case of Lidl, the impact is being concentrated especially on its logistics platforms in Galicia (Narón) and Andalusia (Málaga and Dos Hermanas), where the concentrations are preventing both the arrival and departure of merchandise, with the consequent affectation to part of the store network.

At Aldi, some trucks have not been able to enter and/or leave with the load of some of its distribution centers, which causes specific shortages of products in some stores in the areas most affected by the mobilizations. “We are working to reduce the impact for the customer on the shelf,” they told elEconomista from the distribution chain.

In the case of Nestlé, the company’s dairy factories located on the Cantabrian coast are having difficulties in receiving goods, such as raw materials and packaging, as well as in the dispatch of the finished product, a situation that may also affect the rest of the company’s factories throughout Spain if the carriers’ strike continues.

Other large food groups, such as Danone and Idilia Foods (which includes brands such as ColaCao, Nocilla, Paladín, Okey and Mesura), affirm that they are operating so far without relevant incidents in the country.
