The Minimum Vital Income has already completed two years of existence since its creation in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Currently, it reaches almost 1.2 million people who will be able to benefit from the new amounts of the benefit, which will be extended after its implementation for the second quarter of the year.
At the end of March, the Government announced a 15% increase in all amounts of the Minimum Vital Income. The measure was included in the aid package for citizens due to the economic effects of inflation and the war in Ukraine, articulated in Royal Decree-Law 6/2022, of March 29, but it was limited to the months of April, May and June.
Now, close to the deadline for its expiration, the Government has already hinted that the measure will be maintained at least until the end of the year, given that the economic context remains the same and the protection of the most vulnerable sectors must be insisted on. of the population.
The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, has stated that his cabinet is working with the rest of the Government to extend the increase in the amounts of the Minimum Vital Income: “We are working, although it is not yet finished, on a horizon temporary until the end of the year. Something similar happens with the IMV as with other measures that could be close to being maintained: the drop (yet to be determined) in the .
Thus, the amounts of the Minimum Vital Income will be extended at least until the end of 2022, except for the last surprise that is not contemplated. The 15% increase is in line with the one that the Government, those that are paid to people who did not contribute enough for a contributory pension.
The 15% increase has a special character, since in the case of cohabitation units that receive the child support supplement (which gives amounts of ). For all other cases, the 15% increase is applied directly to the limit established for each of these cohabitation units.
It should be remembered that the amount of the Minimum Vital Income is the guaranteed income for each unit of coexistence and that the benefit, therefore, is compatible with income from work such as salaries, pensions, unemployment benefits…leaving the IMV in practice as the difference between the income of the cohabitation unit and the guaranteed income for said unit.
