This is Horizon Home, the new evolution of Zuckerberg’s metaverse

Since , Mark promised that the it would be an ideal space to socialize with friends and familybut despite the fact that the metaverse has advanced in recent months, the company has barely announced its first tool designed with this objective: Horizon Home.

Zuckerberg presented the new virtual space called Horizon Home, which is now available in the Meta Quest v41 update, the virtual reality glasses necessary to access the metaverse. This space will allow users to get together with friends to hang out and chat without having to develop a specific activity.

Horizon Home will be a space to live with friends and family

Horizon Home had already been presented last year during the event Connect of 2021, and is presented as a home version of the metaverse, a plugin where users can be part of a party or play a game together, and, a space dedicated to work matters.

Thanks to this new update, your friends will be able to visit you in your virtual home, which is the space where you start your experience in the metaverse and where you can choose your design among some pre-designed options such as a space station, a train station or a Japanese inn. In the future, Meta plans to roll out a feature to create your own environments and no longer rely on third-party applications.

For the tool demo, Zuckerberg invited rock climber Alex Honnold into his virtual space. Each one connected from home, to share the experience of being on the platform and together they saw a Honnold climbing on a cliff in the Dolomites in Italy.

In his own Facebook post, Zuckerberg wrote, «Watching Alex climb with Alex’s avatar in VR was pretty meta.”

The security of the metaverse worries users

One of the topics addressed during the presentation is the way in which Meta will protect the intimacy and privacy of users to access the Horizon Home application, as this is the main problem that all virtual environments face. Let’s remember that Meta is not the first company to enter the metaverse, within immersive games like Second Life and Roblox several users have suffered sexual harassment and assault.

Faced with these concerns, a spokesperson for Meta assured that «party organizers can unilaterally remove guests from both the party and the Meta Horizon house.” Users can make use of the system level lockdown option or they can submit a problem report. As with other Horizon apps, users can also choose to escape social situations with a click, disconnecting them from voice chat and the general environment.

Similarly, the spokesperson stated, “what’s more, Meta Horizon Home uses hotspot scrolling vs. free scrolling to reduce the likelihood of users’ VR avatars colliding with each other”
