This is how Easter 2021 will be: perimeter closures, curfew at 10 p.m. and no massive events

The autonomous communities, together with the Ministry of Health, have agreed to the perimeter closure of all Spanish regions for Easter. In order to stop the increase in infections, which will bring a new holiday with hardly any events, with reduced social gatherings and with a curfew that will go from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

With an incidence of contagion of almost 160 national average cases per 100,000 inhabitants (with wide differences between autonomous communities) and 722 deaths in the last week, the Autonomous Communities have reached a common agreement to completely shield Spain from the Easter coming up.

From March 26 to April 9, to protect the key dates for both the weekend ahead and the week behind, the Public Health Commission has only found Madrid’s reticence entirely.

Madrid prevents a 100% common agreement

And it is that the capital, with Isabel Díaz Ayuso at the helm, has been the only dissident of the meeting. True to its position in recent months, the Community of Madrid does seem to keep its borders open, although everything indicates that there is no destination for its citizens due to the closure of the rest.

The curfew, in this way, could even be eliminated as the regional government has been studying in recent days. Even at 11:00 p.m. with hotels and shops closing at the same time, it could well be extended from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. or omitted. In addition, other measures such as social gatherings (currently prohibited in private settings) could be relaxed. The Canary Islands, to a greater extent, and the Balearic Islands would also have joined some of the capital’s proposals.

The Autonomous Communities close their borders

As has been discussed, the general agreement will bring about a complete closure of the regional borders. A pact that had already been negotiated in recent days with Catalonia, Galicia, Asturias, Andalusia, Murcia, the Valencian Community, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, La Rioja and the Balearic Islands, making clear its intention to close the perimeter only for the holidays. However, the position of the other six (Basque Country, Canary Islands, Navarra, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Cantabria) to reach a binding consensus has ended up being decisive for the total closure.

It will be for this reason that Spain will shield itself for 17 days with the command to “avoid all trips that are not necessary.” This impacts university students who reside away from home, who will be advised not to return home. In addition, before a trip, Health will advise carrying out a PCR or a binding test.

At 22:00, home

The other point according to the meeting has been to stipulate a national curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the next day. A schedule that could vary in some autonomies, although all (except Madrid) have been favorable to the measure.

This will try to maintain the position that exists from the , by which the Autonomous Communities deny going out to the street at night (with exceptions) and thus reduce social gatherings.

The meetings, a maximum of 6 people

Some meetings in private life that will be discouraged but before which the limit of four to six people will be maintained. According to the autonomy, which will be the one who decides where to put the maximum, it will be monitored that if there are meetings they are of no more than two groups living together. A position that will be very similar in public life, with limited capacity in hotels and variants between open and closed spaces.

Without processions but with masses

As the Ministry of Health had already been warning, any event that could bring together a large group of people will also be totally prohibited. The notice, focused on the processions and steps of Holy Week, will leave an image similar to that of 2020 when the Spanish squares were emptied before the religious celebrations.

Yes, there will be ceremonies in closed spaces, although always with the proper measures of distance and hygiene as well as capacity. Thus, each region will impose its limit for churches, cathedrals and others according to the infection rates of said autonomy.
