This is how you can adopt a retired police dog: the way to return the favor after years of service

They don’t have a badge or a gun, but they are a very important part of the National Police. The body’s dogs are one of the best-known elements of the institution and they need our help after their years of work.

Once the dogs reach a certain age and the time comes for them to retire, there is also a problem: how to get them a home and love until the end of their lives? The Adopta K9 association is one of these options to be able to carry out a good deed and return, at least for a few years, the favors that these furry four-legged have done to society.

The organization is part of the non-profit association Police K9 and aims to help find families for retired police dogs and also from other branches such as rescue units or firefighters. To this end, it is made up of a representative from each of the State Security Forces and Bodies from the different delegations spread throughout Spain.

How can a retired police dog be adopted?

The own Adopta K9, which has three phases:

-The first one is to formally request the adoption, which is done by filling out a . In it we will not only have to give our information in the form of data, we will also have to explain what we intend regarding the future with the dog in question, all with the idea of ​​always prioritizing the well-being of the animal.

-The second begins with a telephone interview that only takes place if the information provided in the previous questionnaire is correct. This interview goes into a little more detail about what was commented on the form and, if applicable, a visit to the home of the family or person who wants to adopt the dog is arranged. This is intended to ensure that the animal will be in perfect conditions in its new home.

-The third and last phase is the adoption itself, which is carried out with the presence of the dog handler and representatives of Adopta K9. If necessary, the organization makes available to the dog’s new family the help of a professional trainer who can give instructions on how to behave with the animal and what it likes and what it does not like. A kind of helper so that the transition of the dog to a new home is not problematic.

For those cases in which the people or families in question cannot adopt a dog but are willing to help, the organization facilitates a program in which they can help financially to buy food, lodging, vaccines…

In addition, you can also do volunteer work and even participate in a Solidarity Store that raises money for these furry ones.
