The era of is in full swing, and within this field the Barcelona Blok has created a structure capable of delivering supermarket orders in just 10 minutes after placing the order in its application. An attractive business model just six months after its launch it has already been acquired by the Turkish delivery giant Getir.
This is Blok, the Catalan supermarket startup with deliveries in 10 minutes
February of this 2021 Blok was born from the hand of its creators Hunab Moreno and Varun Kapor as a new type of supermarket with the promise of delivery in 10 minutes «with two additions: that we sell at supermarket prices, which is important in the e-commerce sector, and that we have an assortment similar to that of any medium-sized supermarket where you can make your purchase”, assured, co-founder of Block.
Six months after its launch, the startup already has 8 warehouses in Madrid, Barcelona and Milan: «On strong days we are having about 200 orders per supermarket and we have quite high peaks«He said a few months ago assuring that they were just»very early results.
Getir has bought Blok just six months after its launch
Now getir, Turkey-based startup that has a similar delivery mobile app and a track record of more than 6 years, has acquired Blok with the aim of growing its business, which until now reached some European markets organically and will now fully enter Spain. Getir started with a grocery and supermarket product delivery app, but now It has expanded its business into other categories like restaurant order deliveries, local businesses, and even water delivery.
This expansion in their service has given Getir the drive to rapidly expand into other markets with great success.. The company has approximately 1,000 million dollars so far (around 842,000 million euros).
The era of delivery startups
In Europe ultra-fast delivery includes well-known startups like , Zapp, Weezy, Flink Gorilla, Dija and more, which stand out for a technology and logistics service especially driven by the pandemic in which millions of people have been at home or away from public spaces and who can easily and quickly obtain products through these applications. A model whose success has much to do with the fact that younger consumers are increasingly using their mobile devices to perform all kinds of practical tasks.
If we analyze the situation worldwide, we see how the delivery sector is led by giants such as (major shareholder of ), Just Eat Takeaway, Food Panda or Uber Eats. For its part, in China, the food delivery sector is dominated by two large companies: Meituan and Ele.me. The latter has been owned by since 2018, while Meituan is controlled by its great rival in Asian eCommerce, Tencent.
In fact, he reported that the food delivery app sector grew by 27% in just 12 months, since the start of the pandemic. But despite these factors, is there a big enough market for all these startups? Many of them fight for investments that allow them to compete, since capital is key in companies emerging companies that need a boost for their logistics and delivery services, installation of dark stores to store products, not to mention that they must face the offer of their strong competition.
So far Blok hasn’t gotten any notable funding, which is not unusual given that it’s a very new company, and it was ready to be sold less than six months after its launch.
«We are very excited to join the pioneers of ultra-fast delivery in our common goal of lead the on-demand grocery market in southern Europe», it’s a statement.
«This acquisition allows us Leverage Getir’s deep industry knowledge, relationships and technology while combining it with our execution capabilities to create a leading company in this part of the world. We have had a great response to all of our launches in Spain and Italy and we are looking forward to redoubling our efforts together with Getir.”
Getir will add Blok’s existing team of over 120 professionals to its staff.
