What differences exist between nourishing and moisturizing your hair when caring for your hair: we asked the expert

Many people interpret the idea of moisturizing and nourishing the hair within the same sentence, as if they were two united or similar terms. However, this is not so. Hydrating is one thing, nourishing is another; and each of them requires specific treatments and products.

To try to clarify the differences, we asked Alberto Sanguino, Director of Education at Llongueras, the well-known hairdressing and beauty firm, about the subject, who answered our questions with a very simple but very illustrative scheme.

If you are thirsty, you need hydration

Hair is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air in humid conditions and loses water in dry environments. The objective of hydration is to retain the water that the hair loses, providing it with natural moisture that restores movement and flexibility. The hair is hydrated from the outside through moisturizing substances that provide it with water and it is important to retain it inside.

What usually causes the damage? External aggressions such as sunlight, wind or heat tools. The damage is usually slight, but it is necessary to restore the water that is being lost as a result of these daily exposures.

What type of hair suffers the most? The frizzy, opaque and difficult to comb.

What aspect should we take into account? Excessive hydration can add fat and weight to the hair, so it will lose mobility.

Recommended products at home? Use specific conditioners or a mask with a moisturizing function, as they form a barrier in the hair fiber to retain the moisture that is inside the fiber.

If you’re hungry, you need nutrition

Proteins and lipids (natural fats found in the structure of the hair) are responsible for nourishing and giving shine. You have to use treatments that penetrate the hair fiber -to repair the damage caused- and that work from the inside.

What usually causes the damage? The use of bleaching or coloring products, with strong chemicals, or the use of thermal tools, permanent or keratin treatments.

What type of hair suffers the most? Those with split ends, brittle, dull, porous, rough to the touch and chemically treated.

What aspect should we take into account? Heat tools, an abuse of lightening based on discoloration, or washing the hair excessively, because normally they are hair that, due to the structure left by the treatments, do not get so dirty and do not need permanent washing.

Recommended products at home? Nutrition rituals based on shampoos, nourishing masks, homemade nutrition treatments with argan and almond oil or shea butter, as they repair the interior of the hair and seal the cuticle.
