Crude oil imports to Spain reached 64,628 kilotons in 2015, which represents a rise of 9.4% and the highest since data is available (1996), according to data from the Petroleum Products Reserves Corporation (Cores). Spain hardly produces oil, so it has to import almost 100%. Nigeria was the best partner of Spain in 2015.
In 2015, the main supplier of crude oil to Spain was Nigeria, with 16.7%, followed by Mexico (13.7%) and Saudi Arabia (10.5%). So the world’s largest oil exporter is only our third best supplier. Mexico is the tenth largest producer of crude while Nigeria is the thirteenth.
Evolution of imports
In addition, imports from all geographical areas increased, with the exception of the Middle East (-1.5%), highlighting the increases in Equatorial Guinea (+86.6%), Brazil (+66.0%), Algeria (+ 40.7%) and the United Kingdom (+32.2%). Imports from countries belonging to OPEC account for 51.8% of the structure.
In December, after six months of increases, imports of crude oil to Spain fell slightly (-0.3%) compared to the same month in 2014.
Imports from the Middle East (-40.9%), North America (-35.7%) and Africa (-6.1%) decreased, which registered a 19.4% drop in imports from Nigeria and no cargo from Angola.
On the contrary, imports from Europe and Eurasia (+175.5%) and those from Central and South America (+10.8%) increased. During the month, 27 types of crude were imported from 17 countries.
