Zaragoza undertakes security measures and repair works in the southeast tower of the Basilica del Pilar

The Urban Planning and Facilities Area of the Zaragoza City Council will undertake this week, in a subsidiary manner and at the request of the Zaragoza Metropolitan Council, owner of the property, security actions in the southeast tower of the Pilar basilica, the one located in the square next to the Town hall building –Milagro de Calanda street–.

All this while waiting for the Provincial Heritage Commission of the Government of Aragon, at its next meeting on September 29, to approve a report on actions to repair and consolidate the damage found in that southeast tower and that the Consistory will also execute in a subsidiary manner.

This was reported this Monday at the Town Planning Management Council held in Plaza del Pilar, where the coordinator of the area has detailed that, as a result of the landslides detected in the tower on September 1, an analysis is being carried out in depth by the Urban Inspection Service and the Zaragoza Fire Brigade.

At present, loose elements have already been removed to eliminate the risk of new landslides and the area has been secured by fencing around the tower.

Another specific case

Likewise, last May, after another specific case of landslides in the northeast tower –same street, on the façade facing Paseo de Echegaray y Caballero–, Urban Planning issues an execution order so that the owner of the property, in this case the

Metropolitan Council, proceed to review all the facades and towers and repair any possible damage that may be found.

At the moment, the Cabildo is working on the elaboration of said project of intervention, analysis and repair of facades that, given the circumstances of the property, requires time, for which reason it has requested Urbanism to execute it in a subsidiary manner, while waiting to have this comprehensive review plan, these first security actions, this week, and concrete consolidation and repair of the cornice of the southeast tower, once the permit from Heritage has been obtained.

In the security work that is being undertaken these days, some stone element that lacks adequate fixing will be removed, specifically, a piece weighing about 20 kilos.

Afterwards, the repair of the cornice of the tower will be carried out respecting the criteria established by Heritage. All this means that the area surrounding the tower will be fenced, perimeter and secured during the coming weeks, including, predictably, the days of celebration of the Fiestas del Pilar. That is why the information has already been transferred to the Department of Culture of the City Council so that they take this circumstance into account when preparing the organizational plans for the activities that this fence may affect.
