The x-bar symbol is not something you come across often unless you work with statistics on a regular basis. For word processing programs like Microsoft Word, most people don’t need to enter the character, so it’s not easily accessible unless you know where to look.
You can produce an x bar in Word in several different ways. Therefore, in this tutorial I will teach you how insert the x slash symbol in Word.
What is the X bar symbol?
The x bar symbol, “x̄”, is used to represent the mean of a data set. This is the “arithmetic average”which is what most people think of when they say “average”: the sum of all measurements divided by the total number of measurements. The symbol appears in many formulas used in statistics, which is where you will most likely need to write it.
On the other hand, the data sample is collected from the population being represented and calculated into a single value known as a statistic. The same single value is used to approximate the characteristics that are true for the entire population known as “Parameters”.
Additionally, together with the mean to approximate the real parameters of the population. Alternatively, the x bar is also used to calculate the arithmetic mean which is used to measure the sum of the measurements, then divided by the total number of measurements.

How to Make an X Bar Symbol in Word
What I will teach you below to do it:
- . Opens “Microsoft Word”you’ll probably need to download one if it’s not on your Windows PC.
- Step 2. From the top tab menu, click “Insert”.
- Step 3. Select the “Equation”represented in the symbol “pi” located in the upper right corner of the toolbar.
- Step 4. Writes “X” in the equation box.
- Step 5. Next, you need to highlight the X in the equation box, simply drag your mouse cursor over “X” to highlight it.
- Step 6. Click “Accent” located in the toolbar in the upper right area of the screen. Represented in a “to” lowercase with umlaut.
- Step 7. A menu of accent symbols will appear, simply scroll down and select the first box below the icon “Upper and lower bars” which is represented in a square with the bar icon at the top.
This will place a bar over your “x” and will create an X slash symbol in Word.
Make an X slash symbol in Word using macOS
Follow the steps below to do so.
- Step 1. Visit the menu “Applications” and open “Word”.
- Step 2. Just write “X” anywhere on the page, this will cause the X bar to appear.
- Step 3. Once this is done, simply press the button “Ctrl + Command + Space” simultaneously to open the character viewer.
- Step 4. Now write “combining overline” in the search box. The combination of top lines is represented by a black line around the corner rectangle.
- Step 5. Click on the combination line, the “x” that you wrote above will appear in the x bar.
The panel “Recently used” will be added in the Character Viewer, so you need to do the same process to create an x bar.

Using alternative codes
A faster method to create the half symbol in “Word”using codes “alt”. Write a letter “x” lowercase and then press and hold the key “Alt” while you write “0772” using the numeric keypad before releasing the key “Alt”. You can produce a longer bar by writing “0773” instead.
Using Arial Unicode MS
Another method to type the x slash symbol in Word uses the font “Arial Unicode MS”. Change the font to Arial Unicode MS, type a “x” where you want the x bar to go and then navigate to the window “Symbol”.
There, find it in the tab “Insert”at the far right of the toolbar, next to the section “Equation”. Then click the drop-down arrow and choose “More symbols”. Make sure that “Arial Unicode MS” is selected in the section “Fountain” at the top left of the screen.
Also, make sure it says “Unicode (Hex)” in the section “From” towards the bottom right of the window. In the countryside “Character code” next to “Of”writes “0305” to go to the bar. Now click “Insert” to add it to the “x”.
