It is true that the more extensions you install, the slower the loading of your website, but like everything, it depends on how you optimize the loading of your site so that this affects you more or less. 😉
However, if you want a drop-down menu that also behaves when faced with an overmouse (mouse event), I don’t think you can do it simply by using the menu provided by Joomla! natively.
If you lower the level of requirement of your menu then you can consider having a menu that shows the categories, although for that you already have the native VirtueMart categories module.
