The AEMPS confirms new symptoms of AstraZeneca: this is what you should watch out for

The Spanish Medicines Agency has included the new symptoms linked to the most serious side effects and thrombi of AstraZeneca, indicating information to health workers and citizens about the signs to which we must pay special attention.

Vaccination continues to advance in Spain and throughout Europe, but not without problems. Regarding AstraZeneca, despite the fact that all the health authorities affirm that the risk of serious side effects is extremely low and that the benefits are much greater than the risks, the Spanish Medicines Agency has issued a new safety circular for health professionals and citizens .

In it, the Conclusions of the European Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC), prepared by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), on reported cases of thrombosis after vaccination with Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine.

Specifically, it is noted that “following the administration of Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca’s vaccine) thrombosis may appear very rarely in combination with thrombopenia, such as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), in the abdomen (splanchnic vein thrombosis) and thrombosis arterial”.

New symptom detected in women under 60 years of age

The agency concludes that based on the data studied, there is a very low possibility of clots forming in infrequent places such as some cerebral or abdominal veins.

Symptoms to watch out for

The Spanish Medicines Agency includes in its note a guide for all citizens vaccinated with AstraZeneca to take into account to recognize symptoms that may indicate serious complications.

Symptoms to watch out for and seek medical attention if they occur include:

– Difficulty breathing

– Chest pain

– Swelling or pain in one leg

– Persistent abdominal pain

– Severe headache that persists or worsens more than 3 days after vaccination

– blurred or double vision

– Multiple small bruises

– Reddish or purplish spots on the skin.

In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, up to March 22, 62 cases of TSVC and 24 of splanchnic vein thrombosis have been identified, of which 18 died. As of that date, 25 million people had received this vaccine.
