The cities in Spain that have the best tap water, according to the OCU

The old saying “there is nothing like the water of Madrid” is part of the collective consciousness of Spanish culture. In a country where there is a “high” quality of products among the autonomous communities, it is time to expand the palate and learn about the benefits of water that other corners of the peninsula can provide.

The fame of the capital’s water is such that many brands make a show of it and makes the consumer stay with that feeling that the best water is concentrated only in Madrid.

However, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) opens the debate with a report, with old results, but which are still valid and validated, and which serve as a source to position ourselves on the map of the places in Spain that have the better tap water. And no, the best water is not only in Madrid.

In this regard, the OCU points out that tap water is of good quality in almost all municipalities. “Of the 62 locations analyzed, only in 7 did we find contaminants or residues from poor treatment when purifying water. City councils should be attentive to quality and better communicate the results of the controls,” they warn.

The water is of excellent quality in 19 localities and good in another 36 municipalities. If you live in any of these cities, “you should not have any qualms about drinking tap water,” argues the OCU. In fact, if you use tap water for drinking and cooking instead of mineral water, “you save more than 440 euros a year” and generate much less waste. The cities that stand out for having the most exquisite water are:

Few minerals, no lime (soft) and no contaminants of any kind. In addition, it has a good price, below the national average

Saint Sebastian

It is a water with a very light mineralization. We found a small presence of copper, probably coming from the pipes in the building. Otherwise, it is excellent in all hygiene and contamination parameters. And it’s cheap too.

It may seem surprising that the water of a city located on an island, where water resources are necessarily quite limited, has crept into the list of the three best. The water can come from a mixture of origins (desalination plant, own wells, aquifers).
