Alberto Garzón assures that “it is not accredited” that FFP2 masks protect better

The Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, has assured this Monday that at the moment “it does not seem that there is a sufficiently rigorous scientific source that proves” that against the coronavirus, for which he has called for the use of all prevention instruments.

During an interview on Canal Sur TV, the minister spoke in this way about the recommendations for the use of FFP2 masks in some European countries and highlighted the measures taken in the face of the difficulty of some families in accessing “a basic necessity good How are the masks?

Among them, he has referred to the VAT reduction so that hygienic masks “are accessible” for the majority of the population. “If at any time scientists consider that the most appropriate thing is to change the recommendation from hygienic masks to another type of mask, we would do it from the Government of Spain,” he pointed out.

In this sense, Garzón has stressed that “it does not seem that there is currently a sufficiently rigorous source that proves that we are better protected that way, with that other type of non-hygienic mask.”

The opposition calls for the cessation

The Parliamentary Group of Citizens has registered in the Congress of Deputies a non-law proposal (PNL) for the disapproval of Garzón and to urge the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to dismiss him immediately for his statements against the scientific evidence on the use of FFP2 masks as protection against covid-19.

As they recall in the text presented, Garzón publicly declared that “there does not seem to be a sufficiently rigorous scientific source that proves” that FFP2 masks protect better against covid-19. A comment that, in the opinion of Ciudadanos, shows that “once again the denialism and irresponsibility” of the Government can lead to “significant” costs in economic terms, but, “and above all, in human lives.”

Likewise, the orange formation has indicated that last May, the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), Fernando Simón, came to describe the FFP2 masks as “selfish”, and therefore discouraging their use. However, they add from Ciudadanos, it has been proven that FFP2 masks are the safest, since surgical masks only protect from the emission of droplets by the wearer, while they also protect against the inoculation of aerosols, as has recalled on several occasions the Spanish Society of General and Family Physicians (SEMG).
