Amazon closes Prime Now to focus on selling groceries with Fresh

Amazon closes the Prime Now platform and large consumption. The decision does not imply, however, a break with local partners and stores in Spain, such as the Dia supermarket chain or the Mercado de la Paz, which will continue to operate through Amazon Fresh.

Company sources explain that “in this way, in Spain our customers will be able to make all their purchases directly on Amazon, with delivery in two-hour slots”, thus launching a challenge to companies such as Mercadona, Carrefour or El Corte Inglés.

As confirmed by these sources, “as the Prime Now shopping experience will become integrated within Amazon, we will discontinue the Prime Now app and website worldwide before the end of this year.”

Amazon Prime customers can shop from more than 10,000 items, including fresh and frozen produce, meat, fish, fruits and vegetables, dairy, snacks, daily necessities, as well as beauty and personal care products, toys and stationery.

Launch

After the launch of the service last February, the general director of Amazon Fresh in Spain, France and Italy, Camille Bur, congratulated it, ensuring that “we are very happy to expand our fast delivery service for food, beauty and care products personnel, as well as other categories”.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the online shopping experience, and we believe that Amazon Prime customers in Madrid will be delighted to be able to make their purchase at Amazon Fresh or at Dia’s Amazon store,” he explained.

Innovation

Amazon presented yesterday, on the other hand, its European Innovation Center for Operations, based in Italy, “designed to improve the employee experience through the development of advanced technologies that reinforce safety at work.”

The new technologies developed by this center are added to the implementation of more than 350,000 Drives units around the world. These robots, launched by Amazon in 2012 and arriving in Europe in 2014, are now a common element in the company’s robotic centers, where their job is to lift and move shelves with orders, bringing products closer to employees and thus reducing journeys on foot.

Working conditions

Likewise, palletizers and robotic stevedores have been introduced to facilitate the work of employees. “These innovations seek to improve the ergonomic conditions of jobs, related to exposure to manual handling of loads and repetitive movements. The company continues to work on new technologies with similar purposes and benefits,” the company says.

Based near the town of Vercelli, this European Innovation Center brings together the latest in Amazon technological innovations for its Operations network – the logistics and supply chain part of the company. Since the first robotic technologies were introduced nearly ten years ago, Amazon has created more than a million new jobs in its operations.

In Spain alone, Amazon employs more than 12,000 people, many of whom work in the operations network, helping to pick, pack and ship customer orders.
