One of the biggest mysteries that have tormented the history of television has finally been solved, and that is that no one can deny that the relationship of “Beto” and “Enrique”, the puppets of the popular family show “Sesame Street”, always gave a lot to think about.
It is well known that this pair of characters did everything together, they couldn’t live without each other, and even shared a room, but after years and years of doubts, Mark Saltzman, screenwriter of “Sesame Street”, confirms the rumors they had years spreading throughout the world: “Beto” and “Enrique” are a couple.
In an interview for the magazine, the scriptwriter acknowledged that when he wrote “Beto” and “Enrique”, he conceived them as a couple.
Mark recalled an anecdote in which a boy asked his mother if “Beto” and “Enrique” were lovers, and revealed: “I always felt that without a big agenda, when I wrote Beto and Enrique, it was. I had no other way to contextualize them”.
Likewise, the American screenwriter confessed that the characters were inspired by himself and his then partner, Arnold Gassman.
“I was like Enrique, the joker and chaotic. While Arnold, as a film editor, was the orderly one. I brought that dynamic to the characters,” he said.
Saltzman noted that his goal was also to show that two such different people could get along.
Although rumors about the homosexual relationship of “Enrique” and “Beto” have permeated the world for decades, the suspicion had almost been confirmed with the cover of the New Yorker magazine in which the image of both characters was used to illustrate the US Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriages in 2013.
Finally, confirmed or not, the close and beautiful relationship of these two charismatic characters always showed children (and adults) how fun and important it is to feel love and build a friendship with that special someone.
