Covid passport in Spain: how to request it and what requirements it has

The Digital Certificate, known as a covid passport and which will come into force on July 1, can now be requested in Spain. The autonomous communities are in charge of issuing this document, which can be obtained both on paper and digitally, but it can also be obtained through the Ministry of Health.

How is the ‘covid passport’

After the agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council, the EU Digital Covid Certificate is a document that is used to travel more comfortably around Europe and has the following characteristics:

– Reports on whether its owner has been vaccinated, has a negative PCR or has antibodies against Covid-19 due to having had the disease.

– It is available in digital and paper format, depending on the choice of the recipients, and will contain a digitally signed QR code.

– It is free, it will be easily obtained and will also be available to people vaccinated before the EU COVID Digital Certificate Regulation comes into force.

How to apply for the covid passport through the Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has enabled the web ‘in order to obtain this document. Only electronic certificates can be obtained through the ministry. In addition, it informs that only people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Spain or those who have had the disease and can be documented with a positive PCR result from more than 11 days ago will be able to get it.

How is it achieved? The interested party must have a digital Certificate or permanent Cl@ve or the Autofirma program. In case of representing another person, the following data of the applicant is needed: identity document, name and surname, date of birth, autonomous community, health card number and document accrediting guardianship or conservatorship.

How soon can I have the certificate? The ministry informs that the time elapsed between the request for the certificate through the electronic headquarters of the Ministry of Health and its receipt will vary depending on the requests in progress and whether it is necessary to verify additional documentation.

How to get the covid passport in the autonomous communities

Access to this type of document through the autonomous communities is similar. Some of the documents that may be required are the health card number and health PIN and an electronic certificate, DNIe or Cl@ve. Thus, if the interested party is already registered in the region’s health system portal, it will be easier. Some autonomies have already launched websites where they can obtain the document.
