Customer stories: a way to fight deforestation in style

If there is a company that is committed to sustainability, that is Paubrasil. Named after a nearly extinct tree, a small group of Brazilian creators repurpose used wood into one-of-a-kind accessories. But while style is important, Paubrasil’s ultimate goal is to spread awareness about ecological living and draw attention to Brazil’s rapid deforestation. Bia, one of the co-founders of Paubrasil, is here to tell us more.

7 years ago, when Bia and Cayo founded Paubrasil, the world was a different place in terms of sustainability. It was more of a niche concern fostered by eco-enthusiasts. Paubrasil believed that recycled materials can be stylishly remodeled and emphasized that one person’s trash can become another’s signature piece.

“We had several challenges. The first was to make people understand the concept of the brand. Today people are very concerned about sustainability, about companies that are more careful with the environment, with the materials that are used. So today the environment is much more favorable for business.”

The concept seemed strange at first. Customers needed time to get used to the idea of construction debris being turned into accessories like phone cases, light fixtures or bottle openers. But over time, the concept grew on them as people understood that each accessory is unique, crafted from single pieces of wood and molded into an object of admiration.

Each item has a unique story, as the material used to make it comes from forests, construction sites, or even beaches. Paubrasil accessories already have a past, so people are naturally attracted to them. The idea was to respect the construction materials as they are, adding personality, passion and identity to the products and emphasizing the need to prevent deforestation. Even the company name has environmental roots, as Pau-brasil is Brazil’s national tree that was once nearly extinct.

“We try to move away from more traditional materials like plastic. Things that are already saturated on the market, so we always try to work with more unusual materials, like wood. Not even our packaging uses plastic. Everything is made of paper and created within the company”

Although the team is small (just over 10 people), they have managed to gain a following on social media, with over 53,000 followers on . Bia knows that for many people, social media is the place to go for shopping. That said, the of long duration of Paubrasil continues to be the most relevant part of doing business, and having the plan of from sweetens the deal. He even went so far as to say that “having a website is essential for the growth of any company”.
