Get started with Google Tag Assistant –

If you work in Digital Marketing, you will surely be interested in what I am going to tell you next: it is called Google Tag Assistant and it is one of the products that Google has created to make your life easier and obtain better results.

Google Tag Assistant is an extension for Google Chrome that allows you to know if the scripts or tags are correctly installed on a website, in addition to other more advanced settings.

  • Identification, validation and troubleshooting of the tags published on a web page from Google Analytics, Google Ads, Remarketing, Tag Manager and Floodlights.
  • It provides you with suggested fixes and a link to the official documentation to find the solution to those bugs.
  • If we detect correctly displayed labels, we can consult additional information, in the same way as in the case of identified errors. In this case we can also see a tracking code or also called “code snippet” to identify and validate all its elements.

Google Analytics: A tracking code from Google Analytics, Universal Analytics and website global.

Google TagManager.

Adwords Conversion Tracking and Remarketing: Now called Google Ads.

flood light: It is a Google Marketing Platform conversion tracking system. It consists of tags that control the activity of your website.

Once this extension is installed in Google Chrome, you have to visit the website where you want to check the correct operation of the tags.

Next, you have to proceed to activate the plug-in by selecting the “Enable” button and immediately proceed to reload the web page, this is because, by default, the extension is launched disabled.

Once the previous steps have been carried out, we proceed to the validation of the tag implementation. Google Tag Assistant has a color system that informs us about this:

Green color. The tag is working perfectly.

Color blue. The tag means it’s working, but there are some general suggestions to improve the implementation.

Yellow color. Some small problems are detected, such as not working for everyone in the label.

Red color. The tag has been broken or is not working as it should. This can cause critical problems during data collection.

Google Tag Assistant Recordings allows you to record all the pages that make up a user’s journey on the Web, even if part of this journey does not occur in the main domain, and to be able to follow the same route later to find out if there are problems with the design of the website.

  • Landing pages that are not related to ads or links.
  • Calls to action that do not work.
  • An incorrect page design that does not direct users to the objective they want to achieve.

I give you an example! A typical user journey might start by searching for a product within a catalogue, add the product to the shopping cart (which at the same time may be on a different domain), review the order and provide their payment information and shipping, clicks the submit order button, and finally arrives at the thank you page.

Google Tag Assistant has become a perfect tool for anyone who wants to make sure their scripts or tags are working properly. If you have any questions about its operation or have any input, we are all ears!
