GIS course #7. Google Maps vs. Google My Maps – .com

In this seventh class of the GIS introduction course we are going to see the differences between Google Maps and Google My Maps, despite the fact that the cartographic base is the same.

It is important to know these differences, since depending on the interaction that we want the user to have with the map, we will have to use one tool or another.

Since we don’t want to stop at inserting the typical Google Maps map, we must resort to something else that allows us to squeeze this service, and in this case the juicer that will provide us with the juice will be the Google Maps API.

We will see how to activate the API and we will know in a brief way how it works from the point of view of the code, simply to see the possibilities that open up. In addition, we will learn to move the style of our maps away from the classic “Google” style that we are tired of seeing, to give it a more personal touch.

7.1. Differences between Google My Maps and Google Maps

In this first video we are going to see the main differences between Google My Maps and Google Maps, and we will present its API.

7.2. Configure the Google Maps API

In this second video we are going to see how the Google Maps API is configured so that we can insert your maps into our website.

7.3. Google Maps API Application

In the third video we are going to learn how to add some markers to the map with code making calls to the Google Maps API and we are also going to learn how to change the style of the maps using the Google Maps Mapstyle application and with Snazzy.

As you have been able to verify, Google Maps is much more powerful than it initially appears. We’ve only made a small foray into the Google Maps API here, but there’s so much more we can do.

The advantages of learning to use the API with code are indisputable, the problem is that the learning curve can be high if we do not have programming knowledge.

As homework, I invite you to try to create a map with a style completely adapted to the corporate image of your company using the tools that we have taught you in this class.

If you have any questions about what we have seen in this class, send it through the intranet support form. See you in the next class!
