When you’re going to start building a website, you’re usually surfing the Internet and you find sites that you like, and you want to do something similar, and you don’t know what technology they’re using.

To find out what CMS ( , Joomla!, Drupal, etc) and what templates, plugins a website is using, there are several tools that can help us by analyzing the page you want to investigate.

When searching the Internet for information about certain websites, you want to know the CMS that is used to build the website, such as knowing which template a website uses because it possibly caught your attention and you would like to design one with a similar structure.

What is a CMS?

The first thing you might ask yourself is what is , and the usual and quickest answer is that it is a dynamic content manager that allows you to create and manage websites made with the wordpress cms, prestashop cms, joomla cms or other common cms to design websites such as Drupal, Magento, Moodle that is used for online training, etc.

A CMS detector can allow you to know what WordPress theme a page has, what a website is made of and obtain details that can serve as a reference in your search.

It is not about Spying or Sniffing, but a fairly common process that is Benchmarking:

1.Built With

Built With is a fairly complete online tool, since it reveals a lot of information about a website: server technology, provider, CMS used, JavaScript libraries, analytics tools, coding, etc.

2. W3Techs

Similar to Built With, since it has common aspects to the previous tools, it can be used to compare results, and obtain some more information that the previous tool does not offer.

3. WhatCms.org

WhatCms.org is an online tool that reveals only what CMS (content manager) a website may be using. It will only tell us if the website uses Joomla!, Drupal, WordPress, etc.

4.CMS Detector

Similar to the WhatCms.org tool, at first it only shows you the CMS that a website uses, but you can click on “Click here to fully analyze …” and then it will present a report with general information about the website, the ranking, indexed pages, social networks, etc.

5.Guess

Like the CMS Detector tool, it doesn’t show much information at first, but indicates what percentage it thinks uses such technology. To see a more complete report, click on “Fetch additional headers and other information for this url”. It can be useful to use Guess as well to compare the results with the previous tools.

6.WordPress Theme Detector

WordPress Theme Detector is an online tool that analyzes a website made with the WordPress CMS, offering data such as the name of the template (theme), the official page of the template, version, license, authors, etc… and the plugins used

7. What WordPress is theme that?

It is an online tool similar to the previous one, but as we have recommended in other tools, it is important to compare, because we can obtain somewhat different data.

While the previous tools are online, the following two have to be installed in the browser.

8.Chrome Sniffer

Google Chrome browser extension that shows the tools used by a page.

9. Wappalyzer

Similar to the extension for Google Chrome but it is for the Mozilla Firefox browser although it is also available for Chrome

These last two extensions are less complete than some of the online tools, but it may be of interest to you to have some of them installed.
