Pedro Zerolo’s widower: “Except for the days of chemo, we were still happy”

Described as “discreet, educated and handsome” by those who know him, Jesús Santos is undoubtedly the person who will miss the late Pedro Zerolo the most. A designer by profession, the widower of the socialist councilor had recently declared that despite the illness, both continued to be very happy and enjoying day to day. The memories of their more than 18 years of relationship remain, ten of them married.

The great love of Pedro Zerolo, her partner for almost 19 years, and husband since 2005, has been by her side until the moment of her death. Jesús Santos has lost her husband and also a part of her personal story of love and activism. Zerolo said that her marriage, ten years ago now, had been the combination of those two factors.

“I have been ‘married’ for 18 years in fact and by law since October 1, 2005. Jesús and I got married for activism and love, aware that love is the best of activisms and that it was necessary to build references”, said the socialist councilor who died today.

Santos is a discreet, cultured and handsome man, who has always been by Zerolo’s side in campaigns, premieres and presentations but in the background. They met when they were both members of the Madrid Gay and Lesbian Collective (Cogam), of which Zerolo was the leader until he joined the Madrid Socialist Party.

Jesús Santos works in the Coordination Department of the European Institute of Design. She married Pedro in October 2005. It was not uncommon to see them in the center of Madrid hand in hand and with affectionate gestures. “We renew our ‘vows’ every day. We love each other very much,” she confessed on occasion, to point out that beyond the days of chemotherapy, they were happy, and had even thought about having children. “Except for the day of the chemo, tests or when some side effect appears, we are very happy every day, because we enjoy the little things,” Zerolo’s widower had declared to the press. Such was the exemplary nature of Pedro Zerolo that he had changed the chemo sessions to Fridays “so he could go to work on Monday,” according to what has been published.
