Retained earnings: what it is – Dictionary of Economics

It is the part of the distributable result (after taxes) that is not distributed in the form of dividends, but remains in the company (generally applied to the constitution of reserves). The non-distribution of profits responds to a strategic decision of the company (adopted by the General Shareholders’ Meeting), which may deem an increase in own resources appropriate.
