Up to 9,000 euros of compensation for buying a car above its market value. That is the maximum figure to which many drivers can choose after uncovering the so-called ‘dealer cartel’ plot. A scandal that affected almost five million users and for which astronomical figures were paid for cars marketed between 2006 and 2013.
Two court rulings against Audi and Volkswagen dealers have pushed millions of Spanish users to denounce one of the most renowned automobile plots in recent years. The pact of 130 points of sale, 21 manufacturers and 2 consultants of almost 30 popular vehicle brands to sell their cars for “anti-competitive” prices.
With the (CNMC) that already denounced such practices five years ago, the total support for users gives rise to these large amounts of compensation. Specifically, up to 9,000 euros correspond to some consumers for the payment, during the seven years that the ‘dealer cartel’ operated, of between 10 and 15% more than the value of certain vehicles.
A policy that violates the principles of the Law for the Defense of Competition and that now, through the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) tries to “compensate for damages” to those buyers who were scammed in their day.
How do I know if I am entitled to compensation?
To do this, all you have to do is sign up for the one started by such an institution where, through various registers, the same OCU can verify whether or not such a right to compensation corresponds. By providing as much information as possible (invoice or proof of rental or leasing payment, vehicle technical file and signed purchase-sale contracts), the database checks whether the car in question is one of those affected.
