The distribution of hardware and DIY billed 15.4% more last year

The distribution of hardware and DIY closed 2021 with a growth of 15.4% in its turnover, according to data from the latest Aecoc sectoral barometer.

The sector thus maintains the good dynamics in sales that began with the reopening of the establishments at the end of May 2020. Since then, it has registered year-on-year growth practically every quarter.

The best data for 2021 occurred in the first two quarters of the year, which closed with growth of 36.5% and 59.8%. Unprecedented figures conditioned by the comparison with the same periods of 2020, which were marked by the closures of the establishments.

In contrast, the third quarter of 2021 ended with a 2.8% drop in sales, while in the last period of the year the sector recovered the path of growth with an 8.2% increase in turnover.

In the detail by channels, the Aecoc barometer indicates that large specialized stores achieved a growth of 23.7% in their turnover, while the increase in sales in traditional hardware stores was 9.1%.

“Since the reopening of the establishments, the hardware and DIY sector has been able to respond to the needs of a consumer who spends more time at home and who is interested in conditioning it”, explains the head of the Aecoc DIY area, Óscar Jimenez.

Looking ahead to 2022, the Aecoc spokesman highlights the “moderate optimism” of the operators in the sector. “There is uncertainty both due to the impact of inflation on consumer behavior and the foreseeable transfer of spending from inside to outside the home with the gradual recovery of normality.”
