Of the more than 700,000 citizens who currently receive an unemployment subsidy in Spain () a significant part receives the subsidy for people over 52 years of age, which appears intended for people who, without the right to unemployment or exhausted a subsidy, reach that age without having reintegrated into the labor market and without resources.
In order to receive this subsidy, regardless of age, a series of requirements must be met: being legally unemployed, not having the right (except for age) to a retirement pension or not having income of more than 75% of the Minimum Interprofessional Salary in individual computation or adding the income of the family unit and dividing it by the number of members.
In addition, the citizen must be registered as a job seeker () and must also sign the activity commitment with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE).
With these accredited requirements, the worker of 52 years or more will only be able to collect the subsidy when any of the following five circumstances occur, which function as a kind of causes that entitle the collection of this assistance aid. The SEPE explains what they are:
-Having exhausted the contributory unemployment benefit (unemployment) or the unemployment subsidy.
-Entering a legal situation of unemployment after having made unemployment contributions for a period of between 90 and 359 days, which would give the right in other cases to the subsidy for insufficient contributions.
-Return to Spain after having worked for at least 12 months within the last six years (in any country belonging to the European Union or the European Economic Area) and without having the right to receive unemployment benefits upon return.
-Be declared with a permanent disability in its partial or fully capable degree after a review process of its previous degree of permanent disability.
-To be released after a custodial sentence in a prison for a period of at least six months and without having the right to collect unemployment when leaving.
Any of the people who, with 52 years or more, is in any of these situations may request the collection of the subsidy for people over 52 years of age from the SEPE. In the event that, being in these situations, with a lower age, the worker is kept the right to collect the subsidy when he reaches the age if he maintains compliance with the rest of the aforementioned requirements.
Amount of the subsidy for people over 52 years of age
People who receive the subsidy for those over 52 years of age should know that during all the months they receive it, they will have a guaranteed amount consisting of 80% of the IPREM, the Multiple Effects Public Income Indicator.
In 2022 this 80% of the IPREM is 463.21 euros per month.
Duration of the subsidy for people over 52 years of age
Unlike other unemployment subsidies, the subsidy for people over 52 years of age does not have a defined duration, since it can be collected until the ordinary retirement age, at which time the citizen will begin to collect their contributory retirement pension.
