Vestas announces the closure of its Viveiro (Lugo) plant

The Danish wind turbine company Vestas announced on Monday that it intends to cease production at its factory in Viveiro (Lugo), where it employs some 115 people.

As reported by Vestas, this closure is part of a process of reconversion of its strategy, which also affects the plants in Lauchhammer, in Germany, and Esbjerg, in Denmark).

In Viveiro, Vestas manufactures generators for the 2 Megawatt (MW) onshore platform, as well as control panels for the V164 offshore turbine for markets outside of Spain.

According to the company, the decision to close comes as a result of the decrease in demand for the 2 MW platform and the need to optimize the manufacture of components for offshore wind, something that makes continuing production in Viveiro unsustainable.

Under current plans, Vestas expects to cease production at this plant by the end of 2021 and will offer outplacements to operators currently working at Viveiro at other centers in the country.

To mitigate the effects, Vestas assures that it will work hand in hand with the Xunta de Galicia and with the central government, as well as with the social agents.

In this regard, it is worth noting that Spain continues to be a key market for Vestas, with more than 4.8 gigawatts (GW) of turbines installed, 6 GW under maintenance and more than 2,200 employees as of August 2021, including the blade factory. in Daimiel, maintenance operations and the headquarters of the Mediterranean region of Vestas in Madrid.
